Question about Magellan GPS

1 Answer

The unit is a Magellan Nav 5000. We understand they are no longer being serviced and we are not looking for repair work rather hopefully some simple explanation to our problem. We are currently in Adak Island in the Aleutian's Alaska. The problem this time is that we cannot get a position when we are using the external antenna. using the unit as a hand held we can get a fix, connect it to the external power and antenna it comes up searching for satellites ,says it is in 2D and that's it. Usually it will only search for 1 sat at a time eg. it will have 25 all across the screen and S and then the stars will appear and sometimes and E ,then it will move to another sat. We can look up the satellites and see the angles and whether they are on or off , we can get the time, just no position. All other functions work OK The really weird thing is that we have a complete back up unit - a Magellan Nav 5000D that we bought -all components still in the box. We have set that up with a direct feed from the battery so we bypass the switch board , no NMEA connections, just the external power and the antenna through the grey box and the same thing happens - we can get a fix as a hand held unit on the internal antenna but not with the external antenna and power. So two complete sperate units doing the same thing when plugged to external power supply but both working fine when used on battery power - weird? There is another yacht here with us and their GPS is fine so signal is good. Its got us beat. It worked perfectly for 19 days on passage from Japan We drop anchor and 2 hours later the screen was in this search mode! If we get a position with the internal antenna then plug into power that postion will come up as an old position and then it will go into search mode again. We have checked all and connections all are good. Any suggestions will be greatly appreciated. regards Merv and Jeannie on Meridian Passage

Good morning, My friend asked me to look into a problem with her Magellan Roadmate 1400. The screen comes on but the touchscreen no longer works.

If the touchscreen no longer works, she would need a new digitizer on her unit. Call magellan customer service to get an RMA set up to replace the digitizer.

Magellan 4000 will not boot. freezes up at magellan on boot. black bar loads and then magellan stops

You will need to send your unit back to or if it is out of warranty, you may contact Auto Nav 2000 Plus, Inc in San Jose and see if you can get your unit recoverd for a fee.
You probably have a internal battery problem or could have been updating your unit when it is not fully charged that will normally cause this type of failure.
Good luck

Magellan Maestro 4250 GPS, the display seems to wash out on sunny days so that it is unreadable. That's without direct sunlight on the unit. Can anything be done or adjusted?

The Magellan 4250 LCD display brightness settings does not do much. I can understand how annoying it is to have the sun's glare on the display making it unreadable. You can improvise a simple sun shade like i did, cut and fit a card board strip on top of your GPS unit to block out the sun glare. It's just simple and cheap solution.

My Maggie was accidentally unplugged while updating the maps. Now it doesn't work at all even after pushing the reset button. How can I repair this or who do I send it to for repair. It is out of warranty.

magellan will repair or replace any of there units that were rendered inoperable due to there updates.

follow what i told this guy, he is getting his repaired or replaced free. READ AND FOLLOW CAREFULLY!

(i have changed some things to reflect the 3100, like the update.)

let me say this 1st because this will be the easy way to fix this assuming you tried to either run the update or ran it again after the failure. if thats the case.

im going to assume you tried to update your unit to the 2.18 update that you downloaded off the magellan site,HERE ( if you havent, i suggest you do it before continuing) and in doing so it bricked your unit.

Magellan Will repair or replace any of there gps sytems that were rendered inoperative due to their updates. they will check your account to see if you downloaded the update.

  • register your unit on if you havent already
  • download the update
  • attempt to install update on your computer2.gif
  • call magellan tell them your unit is not booting up after the update

Hours: Monday through Friday, 6:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. PST/PDT
Telephone: 800 707 9971

hopefully you understand what im saying here.

should you decide to take a different route, let me know and i will help you get it up and running if possible.

Comments: Nov 09, 2009 - glad i could help you, Yuppie_me

dont be surprized if they just send you either a new or refurb, because its rare they fix any of the ones that are returned.

good luck Yuppie_me

Navigator signal non existant?

Most GPS problems - Hangs, frozen screens, problems acquiring satellites, ETC, can be attributed to the device not having the latest firmware installed.
This firmware enables it to communicate with the satellites - but if they aren't speaking the same language they get confused easily. For Garmin GPS Automotive units, Garmin has you do the following before sending it in for repairs:
2 - HARD RESET (CLICK HERE to see instructions for either reset)
3 - UPDATE the device using their WebUpdater software (CLICK HERE for that) Garmin is the only company that offers repairs AFTER the warranty has expired. They offer a FLAT RATE REPAIR service for units no longer in warranty. For Other GPS units please consult your owner's manual or their support site - as each model - and even manufacture dates - can lead to different reset procedures. TomTom

MAGELLAN NEXTAR does NOT offer any types of Firmware or map upgrades or repair services. Instead - they have an exchange program to update to a new UNIT for around the same price as a repair would be. CLICK HERE for more on that. WARRANTY on most GPS devices is 1 year from the date of purchase. Broken screens are considered ABUSE - and not covered under warranty. Finally - If your unit is on the charger for HOURS, You've tried both the car AND USB type charger, and you turn it on... it stays on for a minute (or so) then powers down or never comes on at all - the battery has lost it's ability to hold a charge and must be replaced. Looking around YouTube - you can get a tutorial on how to CAREFULLY crack open just about any GPS. The tool(s) necessary typically are included with the battery purchase. Typically batteries run about $25 +/-. NiCd batteries are meant to be energized once a month so they keep active, and don't build up deposits that lead to their premature failure. I hope this was helpful for you. Thanks for using FixYa - a 4 THUMBS rating is appreciated for answering your FREE question

Loading New Map

I don't know if this is much of a solution, but from what I understand from my extensive research on this product (I bought one online and have been trying to get updated maps), Magellan no longer supports this unit. I looked on their website to confirm, and on the "Scheduled Map Updates" list, the Magellan 300 has no further updates available. Apparently, this has been the case for the last few years.

Magellan Roadmate 800 - External Power Connection

The only thing I can think to add is a general question to Magellan asking why they let a four-year-old child design the power connector as "lightly" soldered to the main circuit board. Very dumb...
