Thinkpad R31 BIOS not working

After upgrading BIOS from 3.04 1FETE4WW to 3.11 1FETF1WW, my Thinkpad R31 is not booting anymore. Until the failed upgrade, it was working fine. Upgrade process had no problem at all as wriiten in the instruction. Power switch and battery charging work ok but no video and booting process.

Is there anyway to revive the BIOS?

Thanks for the advice.

Ibm thinkpad r31 windows vista video drivers

The OS will ,USUALLY, apply a generic driver to the Graphics Adapter, and most essential components. Not always, but usually, when it boots the first thing you do is Windows Updates. You may have problems with some hardware when doing a OS upgrade. It can be tricky. If, say, you jump from XP to 7, you may be able to use vista drivers. Your in luck, on the ThinkPad R31 support website Vista and Win 7 drivers are available, SEE: http://support.lenovo.com/en_US/research/hints-or-tips/detail.page?&DocID=HT072387 Go with Win 7, if you have that option.

I have an old IBM THINKPAD R31 every time i turn it on it says to press F1 for ibm bios setup utility and F12 for ibm boot devices list so i pres one of the 2 and it does nothing it just stays the same...

This is caused by the small battery inside that keeps the time and date for the computer. If it is dead, you get the message you refer to. Sometimes they are easy to change, sometimes it is quite a hassle. If you go to setup, you can change the time and date for that session, but the next time it will be off again.

I need to do a factory restore on an ibm thinkpad r31 no disks f11 takes me to boot setuo but no restore option help

When the system first starts, the following message will be shown on a blank screen:
To start the recovery program, press F11
This message will stay on the screen for about 2 seconds, this will be there every time you start it when it's powered off. If the F11 key is pressed while the message is displayed, then the system should enter the service partition.

Keep trying it because sometimes when the computer comes on you have to do it at the correct time until it catches. I've had that problem and I kept doing it over and over again. It also could mean that your recovery partition is not there. Have you had your system reinstalled before by not using the recovery or the disk? If so your whole hard drive could have been formatted so there won't be a partition to go to when pressing f11.

If that fails then a repalcement hard drive and a cd with the image on it can be obtained by going here

My screen will get really dark after a while

Thinkpad R31 is a pretty old model so you should expect some screen fade over time. This is usually caused by a failing flourescent backlight. A new screen will fix the problem unless you think you are up for a direct light tube replacement. This is tricky work and you can shatter your screen if you aren't experienced enough.
Fortunately for you though, these screens are pretty cheap on Ebay.

I need to format my Thinkpad laptop

If you have a system recovery disk set, just run it. Make sure that your bios has your optical drive (cd drive) as the first boot item.

If you have no recovery disk set, you can use any retail version of windows, and download/install all the necessary device drivers from www.ibm.com

DVD

Hi,
I don't mean to disagree with my associate, but DVD players for R series (or T, A, etc) can be found for less than 20.00 US (Ebay is a good example)
For that matter, we've got at least a dozen at our shop which we sell for 25.00
Installation is very simple as well, just pop the old drive out, put the new drive in.
Good luck
