The battery should be 12 volts. Expect to see from about 12.2 to 12.6 volts with no charging. When being charged, 13.85 is typical for most 12 volt batteries. I would question the accuracy of your meter. One also has to check the voltage while attempting to crank the engine. The voltage may drop WAY DOWN WHEN A LOAD IS APPLIED. Take the battery to one of the auto supply stores and they will usually check it with a load tester.

For float charging one can just use clips on the battery.

I don't have a source for the float plug, but it may use one of the typical coax plugs used on consumer electronics. You are best to replace the float charger with an exact unit.

I have a briggs and stratton 8500/5500 generator which I am using to power an air conditioner on a camper trailer. I just recently started having a problem where the one circuit breaker keeps tripping when...

Hello, First figure out what the load per leg is on your generator. Are you using the 240 Volts because this is two 120 AC volts legs and they are 120 degrees out of phase with each other.

You will need to figure what the power factor is for each phase on this generator. To figure the power/wattage by using ohm's law. Voltage times Current will give you Watts. Example: If the generator is generator 240 volts the maximum current available is about 23 amps. The maximum current for 120 volts will 46 amps. Therefore, the maximum current per 120 volt circuit is 23 amps for one circuit and 23 amps for the second 120 circuit..

I would try replacing the circuit breaker with the same amperage breaker. Also, watch what the generator load is per circuit. You can install current meter for each circuit. This will give a good indication of which circuit is pulling more load than the other circuit. GB...stewbison

Briggs & Stratton 12KW Model 040229 LPG Generator. 96 Volts @ the 120 Volts outlet, When I turn the house 2 Ton AC voltage increase to 106 Volts.

Can you manually adjust the voltage on the generator without load?? If you have 120/240 60hz output on it and you are not overloading the unit (amperage), then it may be as simple as adjusting whats called your gain setting for your voltage regulator. Obviously you are seeing what happens when it is set too low. Trying raising that setting until it becomes unstable then back it off. Unstable meaning voltage starts jumping all over.

Put new battery on 14 hp v-twin Briggs, started and ran for a while. Shut motor off then came back and tried to start, acts like the battery is dead. Where is the generator/altenator located on these?

The generator is under the flywheel with or part of the ignition coil.

Check all the battery wiring and grounds. A bad or weak connection will act the same way.

You have a fuel delivery issue that can be dealt with by cleaning carb or replacing it. If you do replace carb has to be adjusted to the motor.(idle, mixture)

I have a Briggs and Stratton 5500 watt Generator 30241, I live overseas and I use 220 volts 50hz. How can I adjust the generator to run on this voltage.

Hello, I would not advise you to adjust the speed without a frequency meter. for 220 volt operation, you will have to use the twist - lock receptacles and not use the neutral in the receptacle. This means one of the generator's hot leads is going to be the neutral in your system. The frame of the generator may be connected to the neutral of the generator, so be careful so that you do not receive an electrical shock. The voltage is adjusted within the receptacle box. There might be a small hole on the right side of the receptacle box that you can insert a small blade screwdriver into to make the voltage adjustment. You do not need to change this much to change the voltage. Now, the frequency is adjusted by a self-locking nut located under the air cleaner right side, when facing the engine. There is a spring on this nut / bolt assembly. I think it is a 5/16 nutdriver or socket that you need for this. Turn counter clockwise 1/8 of a turn. This will slow down the generator to about 50 - 55 hz. This is okay if you are running at around 52 hz. As the generator loads, the rpm will drop down. A frequency meter would be great to use here, as a too low rpm could burn out electrical motors and other equipment that you are using.
