Question about Heating & Cooling

Flame rollout on ignition causing rollout switch to fail, prior technician to me feels it is the heat exchanger. I feel that if it was the heat exchanger the rollout would occur after the indoor blower motor comes on. I speculate that the draft inducer is not purging all the gases prior to ignition.

Roll out occurs if there is not enough combustion air at the burners or there is a blockage of the vent pipe. check both for problem. a blocked heat exchanger can also cause a roll out.

It still could be the heat exchanger because it causes back draft pressure in the combustion chamber

Amana 80 sse flame rollout sensed what does this mean and how do I fix.

The flame rollout switch is located in the burner box on the left side on an upflow model. There are two wires connected to it .between the two connections is a small red button. Depress this until you here a small click. This should reset the switch. These
switches usually open because the flame is "rolling" back instead of being drawn into the furnace.start furnace and check for flame rollout.when the main blower fan comes on if you notice any change in the flame turn furnace off and call a qualified service person as this could indicate a cracked heat exchanger and could cause carbon monoxide to enter the house a potentially dangerous situation. I strongly urge anyone with a gas appliance installed to have a good carbon monoxide(CO) detector installed also. Hope this helps.

I have a goodman gmpno 60. I have a lot of flame rollout especially on ignition rolls all the way out the box. After ignition and before Blower kicks on still have flame rollout but is more after Blower...

This was my 1st thought after a crack. The fact the indoor blower affects it is a give away. I would get a carbon monoxide detector, if it goes off you have some work to do.

Unfortunately that means there's a hole in the heat exchanger, particularly in that cell of it. When the main blower comes on the air is pushed into the heat exchanger, causing the flame rollout. A heat exchanger crack or blowout is usually what condemns a furnace for good. Goodmans however, have a lifetime warranty on their heat exchangers, so you'll probably be able to find someone to replace it pretty cheap, or do it yourself for free.

Hello, sounds Like the Furnace is tuning off due to the limit switch or rollout switch opening. A limit switch and rollout switch are safety swtiches that will turn off the furnace if it gets to hot or the burners flames are abnormal. Usually a weak blower motor, dirty blower wheel , dirty burners or even a crack in the heat exchanger can cause this problem. Best bet is to call a hvac technician and have them check it out.

Thank you for posting your question here on Fixya.com.

The E in your model number means it is an electronic ignition...you do not have a pilot. ROL means your flame rollout sensor is open. Either the wiring to the sensor or the sensor itself is faulty or there is a flame rollout issue causing the heater to shut down for good reason and the cause of the rollout needs to be determined and corrected in order to run the heater.

The replacement part for the switch is 006035F. It will need to be replaced since one it burns open it is shot.

Causes for flame rollout issues include blocked gas venturies on the manifold causing a sudden and violent ignition of gas as it lights the burners or blockage of heat and flue gas from escaping across the heat exchanger and out the top of the heater.

Rollout switch continues to trip

If you have a cracked heat exchanger this will cause the flames to rollout and trip this switch. Its meant to stop the furnace from running and putting carbon monoxide in your home. Watch the furnace as it tries to light if when the gas valve opens and flame is established it should go into the tubes heat the heat exchanger and then your main blower motor will come on. When your main blower comes on is usually when you see the flames rollout and trip that switch. If this happens you can either buy a heat exchanger or new furnace if its a older unit Obama still has that awesome tax credit til 12-31-2010.

Blower turns on when stat calls for heat but manifold is not being ignited (do not hear gas valve even trying to release gas). No spark either. Could it be insufficent gas pressure?

Here is the ignition sequence for a spark ignited furnace. This will help you understand what is happening/not happening.

Thermostat calls for heat.

draft inducer motor (DIM) starts drawing draft through heat exchanger.

Pressure switch detects proper operation of DIM, and sends signal to board to begin ignition.
(it detects negative pressure)

Ignitor starts ignition attempt and gas valve sends gas to burners.

Upon ignition, flame sensor detects flame and sends signal to board stopping ignition sequence and continuing gas flow for heat mode operation until thermostat is satisfied.

During this sequence the blower motor is brought on, and by using a series of temperature limit switches, the system assures that the unit is operating properly.
(If the blower is not operating, or the airflow is inadequate, the heat exchanger will overheat and trip one or more temp limit switches.)

There is also a "rollout" switch that detects improper flame pattern "rolling out" into the controls compartment.

Now, to apply that to your situation.

If you have no spark, than the failure is happening before the gas is supposed to be flowing.

That usually means a failure at the D.I.M. Typical causes for that are a clogged flue pipe/vent, damaged/deteriorated fan blades, bad fan, or bad pressure switch.

If one of the temp limit switches or rollout switches have tripped, it will simply shut off the system.
(Some units will turn on the blower motor and shut down everything else.)

You can try resetting the unit by disconnecting power for 1 minute, and attempting a restart.

First look for any flashing LED lights. If you see any locate the wiring schematic (usually on the inside of the front panel) and look for the flash codes.

If the reset does not solve the problem, let me know what flash code you are getting, and/or let me know exactly what you see the furnace doing, in detail, after the restart.

Heater not working

yor heater has 3 high limits and a flame rollout switch(aka thermal fuse). be advised that bypassing safetys is not recommended and is dangerous.these component failures are symptoms. we need to find causes.if limits are failing look at sooted or possibly a nest on your heat exchanger. if its a flame rollout problem look at obstructed burner or oriface.

you probably have a cracked heat exchanger which is causing the rollout switches to trip.even the tiniest of cracks will cause the fan to blow the flame back into the unit and cause them to trip. check the heat exchanger for even the tiniest of cracks if so replace it. and be sure to have a carbon monoxide alarm in your home.
