Question about Sony STR-DH800

1 Answer

I have a Sony STR-DH800 which was purchased in May of this year. It was working fine until last weekend when the speakers popped and the unit said it was protecting and shut down. Now I can power on the device for about ten minutes and then it simply shuts down. During those ten minutes there is no pictures or sounds... other than a hum in the speakers. The Dish Network and Blu Ray are pushed through this unit's HDMI's into the Sony TV. Anyone know of a good solution, what might be causing it or anything at all that could assist me in fixing this unit. Thanks, David

Only solution go back for warranty if there is no answer for this solution in the user manual.
release power connector for a moment isnt the right thing tom do , this product is to young for any kind of problems, the hum is look like there is a capacitor damaged or something loose in the power supply that there failed a powerline , the only thing is back to the dealer for warranty.

SOURCE: How to connect BLU-RAY DVD player to Pioneer Plasma TV via HDMI

The best possible solution to your problem is :
Connect your blu ray player directly to the HDMI input of you Plasma and watch HD video....
and connect the 5.1/7.1 sound thru the optical or the coaxial link directly to your AVR 3805.
You will not loose anything on the Blu-Ray.
The sound is best processsed by the AVR3805, while the video, which is the real upgrade (BluRay) in terms of resolution of picture would be processed by your plasma.

Connect and Enjoy

SOURCE: blu-ray player won't play through hdmi with yamaha reciever

The problem is some intermediate connections do not allow the HDCP signal to reach the telivison. Electronic HDMI switches have this issue. I have one HDMI port on my Telivision and I have a Blu-ray player & HD satellite reciever. I had purchased a two in one electronic switch and found that the satellite reciever signal would make it to the tv and was working but the blu-ray player was not. I had to by a passive push button switch and it allows the HDCP signal thru. The funny thing is the electronic switch was supposed to be HDCP compliant and it still did not work.

My str-dh800 develops an internal hum after being tuned on for a couple of hours

The main power supply filter capacitor is the problem, as the temperature rises the capacitance drops while in use and eventually the audio gets a distinctive 60 cylce audio hum. The part must be replaced in order to correct the issue.

If you're using the terminals for Surround Back (7.1) there is no Speaker B option.

See the notes on page 19 of the manual.

Own a SONY 7.1 STR DH800 receiver, how do I fix protector message?

There could be a number of issues wrong with this unit. If you have removed all inputs and speaker outputs and the unit still goes into protect you could either have a problem with the switching power supply or a shorted output stage. Both would require a trained technician to troubleshoot and repair.

Subwoofer hum from STR-DH800

That points pretty much to a bad shield on the cable. Have you tried another one? Another thing to try is to rotate the AC power cord on the sub (if it has one). Sorry, too lazy to look it up.

Speakers pop and rear speakers cut out of surround sound

Hi,
your problem is a bad solder connection of the relay linked to the lautspeaker sockets. I had the same problem and googled for the solution. Since I resoldered the pins everything is fine. That problem is well known and happens to a lot of Sony receivers.

I can send you a link with a detailed how-to-do solution with pictures, however it's written in german language. But you can use some online translators.
