When you say big, I'm assuming you mean resolution. Right click anywhere on the desktop, then click properties. Open the tab at the top that reads settings. You'll see a bar that reads more or less. Try 1024 by 768, then click apply.

How do I change the desktop text, icons and bars back to 100% from 500% in Windows 8.1?

Hi Cindy

You have set a customer DPI scale for your display.

Right Click on desktop
Choose "Screen Resolution"
Click on link that says "Make Text and other items larger or smaller"
Click on link that says "Set custom text size (DPI)"
Adjust the scale back to 100%
Apply the changes and all should be well.

What else can I try to reset Windows 8.1 desktop from 500% back to 100%-Text too big to see?

I would use a HIGHER resolution, as this will show things in a finer perspective. The two most likely maximum resolutions on your PC are 1366x768 or 1920x1080

My laptop, an Acer Aspire 5715z, has a big ol' white patch on it with a smaller one at the top of the white one. It covers about half of the screen, and it has blue around the start of the white line.

Oh okay. Your screen is physically cracked. Its broken, its going to need to be replaced. Thats why a part of the screen is coming and then you see splotches on the screen. Looks like somebody hit directly with something or stepped on it. If you turn the laptop off and shine a light on it, you might be able to see where the crack originated.

In the meantime until you get another lcd screen, you can hook up an external monitor to the laptop and use it like that for now.
