This may be a corrupt OS try removing the ram module (First remove all power sources including batteries) then clean the connection of the RAM modules using a pencil erraser replace them very carefully then reboot if this does not help buy a USB IDE connector converter you could basically open all your files in another computer to do this you need to remove your lap top hard drive buy the compatible USB IDE or SATA which ever fits you hard drive then connect it to a PC like using a USB Flash disk or Card

My Dell Inspiron 6400 (Windows XP Home) won't reboot. It's giving me a "Loading PBR for descriptor 1 ... done" line on a black screen. What can I do to fix it. Can I salvage my content / files

Before you use the Recovery CD you need to backup your data because to restoring your laptop will wipe your data off the hard disk.
To backup your data when you cannot boot up your laptop, remove the hard drive and connect it to an USB hard drive adapter. Connect this hard drive/USB adapter into the USB port of a working computer. The computer will see it as an external storage device, you can then open the folders and backup your data.
You can then fit the hard drive back into the Dell laptop and boot up with the Dell recovery CD to reinstall Windows etc.

What is the command prompt in the HP Pavilion a6037c Vista recovery partition that allow me to type the command to recover to the factory settings.

You can access the HP Recovery Manager software using the "F11" command during the boot-up process. The Recovery Manager is a preinstalled utility that can help you resolve issues on your computer system that affect its proper function, such as viruses, system errors or hardware corruption. Restore your computer only as a last resort, since all the files stored on the hard drive will be lost during the process. The restore process can also be helpful in wiping the computer clean before passing it along to another user.

Restart the computer. Press the "F11" key when the "BIOS" messages appear during the start-up process to open the "HP Recovery Manager." This step must be completed before Windows has a chance to load. Click "System Recovery" and click the "Next" button. Click "No" in the Microsoft Restore window that appears and click "Next." Click "Next" in the "System Recovery" window to initiate the restore process. The hard drives will be reformatted and the computer's software returned to the factory settings. Click "Finish" to restart the computer with the original operating condition in place.

Toshiba A60 equiam will not boot from original recovery disk

Try reseating the RAM modules and then try the recovery CD.
If it still fails, take the RAM modules out and take them to your friendly computer repair shop and get them to test the RAM.

It will not reboot the message 'boot manager is compressed' is displayed and will not move past it

Check points for fixing compressed boot-manager:
  • Boot into Windows Recovery Environment (usually the install DVD or Create a Windows Vista/7 Recovery disk on an USB stick) and perform a "Startup Repair".
  • If the above doesn't solve the problem then boot into WinRE again, but when selecting the Vista-installation, then press "Load Drivers" (Instead of "Next") and use the mini Windows Explorer to right-click the boot-drive and deselect "Compress this Drive" and choose Apply to sub-folders and files.
  • If that also fails then boot into WinRE again, and go to the "Command Prompt" and execute these commands:
    • compact /U C:\bootmgr
    • compact /U C:\ntldr
  • If you for some strange reason have lost your Vista DVD, then you can also use a Windows 2000 / XP install CD and enter the recovery console instead and execute the following commands:
    • attrib -c c:\bootmgr
    • attrib -c c:\ntldr

The partition D is actually a back up partition that has factory image for the original Operating system that was installed in the computer.
factory recovery ( DATA LOSS )
if the computer is booting to windows, then click start and open a folder named as 'acer' listed in ' all programs '.You will find the ' Acer e-recovery managent ' in that folder. You can open it and click allow for the user account controls. Please click 'restore ' for the next screen and the select the first option, 'completely restore to factory defaults '.Follow the on screen instruction to initiate the Recovery.
The Alternate method for starting the Recovery on startup is using the combination of ALT+F10 ( some models its ALTgr ) on startup.Press and Hold down the ALT( Left hand of space ) and at the same time keep on tapping the F10 key till you get the message " Windows is loading files".Just follow the On screen Instructions to start the Recovery.

Hi Heather,

It seems the Operating system on your computer is not functioning correctly due to a virus issue or some system file or registry entry is corrupted.

I would suggest you to kindly try to do a system recovery using the following method.

If you are using Windows XP, reboot the computer and Start tapping the F10 key on your keyboard repeatedly. You would get the System recovery screen. Just follow the instructions on the screen and complete the recovery process.

If you are using Windows Vista or Windows 7 then reboot the computer and keep tapping the F11 key till you see loading Windows files. When you get the Recovery manager Screen Click on Advance options and select the choice which says "Restore my computer to original Factory Condition" Just follow the instructions on the screen and complete the recovery process.

This will reload the original Operating system and the computer would be loaded to Factory settings.

My computer won't shut down it just keeps restarting

The most common shut down problem is that the system will reboot rather than shutting down. In most cases, the reboot is triggered because Windows XP is designed to reboot after a critical failure. To stop windows from rebooting in case of a failure, you need to take the following steps:
Right click on My Computer, Select Properties, Click on advance tab, Click on Settings under Startup and Recovery, Uncheck the option Automatically Restart under System failure, Click Ok twice and try to shutdown the pc. If it shows any error code then let me know

Installing windows XP - Error encountered

Can you reboot and get into windows or is now corrupt?

What do you mean by 'uninstalled XP'??

You cant uninstall it unless you format the drive, in which case the recovery discs are now probably useless as they rely on a folder on the HDD called i386.

Recovery discs normally dont have the OS on them, they rely on the I386 folder to gather info about the computer and then restores it to the state when it was new.

If you can acess the system, reboot and go into the bios and change the boot sequence to CD, then insert the first recovery disc. then save the settings and the computer will reboot and start the recovery process again, this should clear up the error.

If it does not it will be because the i386 folder is missing in which case you can either explore the recovery discs for it or you will have to buy a copy of Windows XP.
