Take off the air filter cover and shoot a little gas into the carb.
if it sputters you probably need to have the carb cleaned.

What would cause my Troy Built Pony to suddenly stop

That sounds perfect. When the motor turns over, ten thousand (approximately) volts push a whole lot of electrons out to the end of that wire. If they don't have someplace better to go (through the spark plug, across the gap, and to a good ground), they just jump out anywhere they can (into your hand), and dash through you to ground (wherever else you're touching the machine.

The spark plug body (the big metal end) MUST MUST be touching the frame or the engine, or it won't spark - those electrons have noplace to go.

Did you get the right plug? Is it a good plug? Is it gapped correctly? If all true, and if the machine STILL won't start, then the problem doesn't appear to be an ignition problem.

Troy built tiler won't start!!

What is the method your machine uses to decide when to fire the spark plug? Does it have a magneto, and/or ignition points under the flywheel, or a crankshaft postion sensor?

Troy built 675 series will not start and has gas . Ive checked the spark plub connection and all is good .

have you checked the quality of the gas? is it old from last season? open the gas cap and smell the gas, does it smell like varnish? If your gas is bad it wont start because it has lost it"s flamability.also you don"t what to use old gas because it can damage your engine by causing your valves to stick or freeze up...If your gas is bad you need to drain your fuel tank and carb and replace it with fresh gas..You might want to go and get some fuel stabalizer at the auto store or wal mart and add it to you fuel can you use to fill you mower. That way your fuel will be good for up to a year when stabalizer is added to your gas..Have you checked for a spark at the spark plug? remove the spark plug from the motor, plug the spark plug back into the plug socket and lay the spark plug aganst the muffler, pull the pull start cord and look at the end of the spark plug for a bright blue spark. You might want to do this in the shade to be able to see it. If you don"t see a spark , i would try a new plug first and see..if still no spark then your ignition coil has gone bad, that is the whole unit from your spark plug wire to the coil..check these items first,,,

I have a Troy bilt snow thrower 2 stage-storm 2410. Bought it new last year, used it twice. It won"t start even after adding new gas and changing the spark plug. It doesn"t start, engine...

Hello,

You need to remove the carburetor float bowl and clean it. The needle and seat also need to be cleaned. The best thing is to totaly remove the carb. and soak it in a commercial/professional strength cleaner.

Your problem is fuel related, but just to make sure, remove the spark plug and spray some carburetor cleaner in the hole, replace the plug and give it a pull. If it fires up then quits..... The fuel system is to blame.

Hope this helps, Matt

2009 Self propelled Troy Built with briggs and stratton won't start. It ran fine until I added (fresh) gas in it. The last time this happen the repair shop said it was the gas and they changed the spark...

Drain the gas (not because of what shop said). Unscrew the brass bolt that holds the float bowl onto the bottom of the carburetor. Be careful, there is a small washer in between the bolt head and the bowl bottom. Remove the bowl. Clean out the bow. Now, clean the brass bolt. There are holes in the bottom and in the sides where the smooth part is. Use no metal wires. Clean with tooth picks if necessary. Reassemble. This is a real common problem, especially if no in-line fuel filter is used. You may want to install one and don't let old gas evaporate in the mower.

! have a Troy built mower with a Honda engine, it quit running and will not start. I changed the spark plug, it ran for about one hour. Now the mower will not start.

Hello. If the gas has been sitting all winter, remove it with a siphoning bulb and put in brand new gas, not even gas that you have been storing all winter. Also, change your air filter. Finally get a can of starter fluid and a helper. While one person squirts a bit of starter fluid into the air intake [near the air filter] the other person starts it and use more squirts of starter fluid to keep it running. Joe

Spark plug gap on snapper comicial mower. briggs and straton 6.0

if you cleaned the carb thats great however if its a carb with a fuel bowl youll have to unscrew this and clean it to they have a habit of accumulating dirt and rust from moisture after cleaning bowl fuel should flow corectly without obstruction allowing smooth running operation also spark plugs are pre gapped for your mower model no need to adjust unless you bent it or are toing a custom projet such as go cart

Have a riding Troy Built that just quit. Will not start. Tested battery, it's good. Has gas. Any suggestions?

Sounds like your electronic ignition has gone bad. Usually when they start going bad you can let the engine cool and it will restart. In your case, apparantly it gave no warning. Check it by unscrewing the spark plug, leave the lead wire hooked to it, placing the spark end of the plug against the head. Try to turn the engine over and see if there is any spark jumping from the end of the plug to the metal. If not, it's the electronic ignition. But be sure the plug you are using is good.

The engine stalls

you may have trash in the gas tank. empty it nad wash it out real good make sure the gas you use is fresh the vibration could be the blade ; or it could be that when the rock was hit it bent the shaft and that would cause vibration also. remove the spark plug and rotate the blade with your hand, you should be able to tell ifi the shaft is bent or not if not try putting a new blade on
