Question about Whirlpool Ultimate Care II LSQ9564J Top Load Washer

1 Answer

Motor Coupling?? I saw your posting to someone about maybe fixing the motor coupling. We can't afford a repair-man if it's not necessary, so I'd like to try it myself. You said you could tell me how to do it? I have the Whirlpool Ultimate Care II Top Load Washer. It just started today where it filled up with water and then nothing. It sounds like the motor is running, but the agitator is not catching and spinning at all. It sounds a bit scratchy too. The water will eventually drain and the timer knob goes to the off position like it's done the full cycle, but the clothes are still very wet and the detergent is still sitting on the top layer. If I can, I'd like to fix it myself. Thanks!!

Well I'm going to do my best to fix your washer. First unplug the washer and turn off the water. If you have a shop vac take the drain hose out of the drain, and through the drain hose vacuum the water out of your washer. If you don't have a shop vac go to the auto parts store and buy a pair of radiator hose clamps. Then facing the washer locates the two screws. They will either be in the front or rear of the control panel or back them out far as you can. Once you have done that pull the control panel slightly forward, and tilt it back on the hinges. Now unplug the lid switch wire but don't forget to plug it back when you’re done. Next locate at the rear of the washer body the two gold clips then push forward, and take careful note of how they fit. Then pop them out with a screw driver tilt the washer body forward at 45 degree angel and walk forward with the body, and set it down. Now you will see the white pump and motor assembly. You should see two clips holding the pump to the motor pop them off, and pull the pump off the motor shaft. Now if you fell the need to remove the pump use the radiator hose clamp. Take them and clamp the hose coming from the tub but it’s not necessary for the repair. Next disconnect the wiring harness from the motor (note the position of the harness for reassembly). Remove the two 5/16 inch screws from the motor clamps and pop the clamps off. Once that is complete, remove the motor put the new coupling on the motor and transmission shaft. I use a socket and a hammer

Need to replace coupling between tub and motor? How does tub come off?

If you are referring to the motor coupling, it is actually located between the drive motor and teh gearcase. You DO NOT have to remove the wash tub in order to access and replace it. The following link explains step-by-step how to replace a motor coupling on a Whirlpool top loader:

If you have questions about this repair, or if the model washer you have differs from the one you listed this question under, please post back and let me know. I hope this helps you.

My washing machine does not spin at the last cycle to wring out the clothes. hence, the clothes stay wet, and then stops and 3 beeps. I do not understand why i am having so much problems with this machine....

on some washing machines, there is a coupling that goes between motor and the transmission. if the coupling is bad tub will not spin, get access to motor and check it out. the coupling is made of hard rubber so as to not break anything if the motor or transmission jams up, only the coupling will go. its less than 20.00 at most appliance stores. if the coupling is ok, then remove switch from washer lid, tape the two switch wires together. if it spins fine now then the switch is bad and needs a new one.

My 70 series washer does not spin. The washer made a banging noise (we thought it was out of balance) but still spun slowly through the first spin cycle. After the rinse cycle, the drum would not spin and...

The problem is usually attributed to either a bad gearcase (transmission), or a broken motor coupling.

Since the washer still drained, this indicates the drive motor is still working as the drain pump is driven by the motor. The easiest (and least expensive) part to check first is the coupler. The coupler is located between the drive motor and gearcase and takes the place of a drive belt. This type of configuration is known as "direct-drive". The following link explains how to access and/or replace the motor coupling (if required):

http://www.fixya.com/support/r385250-replacing_motor_coupling_kenmore_top

The motor coupling is comprised on three pieces (two plastic pieces with three tines, and a rubber bushing). Usually the tines snap off, the rubber bushing shears apart, or the center hole that the motor shaft is inserted rounds out and the coupling slips. Newer versions of the motor coupling have a steel grommet in the center to make it more resilient. The part number is included in the link I provided. A replacement can be purchased at appliancepartspros.com for about $11 or $12.

If you inspect the coupler and discover that is still intact, I'm aftraid you may have a gearcase that has gone bad. The gearcase price averages about $150-$160 if you wish to replace it yourself. If you wish to pursue the repair on your own, it is not difficult. The following link explains:

http://www.fixya.com/support/r699497-replacing_gearcase

A replacement gearcase can be purchased at any of the following web sites:

searspartsdirect.com
pcappliancerepair.com
appliancepartspros.com
repairclinic.com

I hope I've given you enough information to work with. If you have any questions, or need assistance with identifying part numbers, please post back with your model number (located on a nameplate along the wash tub rim) so that I may be able to provide you with better assistance. I hope this helps you.

My ge spacemaker is about 6yrs. old it will not spin or dry clothes how do i fix it w/o paying a repair man

i would first check the lid switch it could have a broken wire on it. here is the picture of where it is250 located. the part number for it is WH12X955. you could also check the direct drive coupling which is located on the motor shaft and consists of 3 pieces. this coupling takes the place of a belt. your machine does not have a belt on it. the coupling part number is 285140. hope this helps.

Washing machine not agitating

If the washer does not agitate at all, does not spin, but will still drain, this is a symptom of a broken motor coupling.

The following link explains how to replace one:

http://www.fixya.com/support/r385250-replacing_motor_coupling_kenmore_top

This is a very simple repair that doesn't cost much. The repair is actually much easier than you think and requires no special tools. The part number is included in the link I provided. Appliancepartspros.com carries a replacement motor coupling for about $11.

NOTE: A broken motor coupling is usually accompanied by a loud rattling noise. You can hear the motor engaging and running, but there is no tub action.

If you need an illustration, you can refer to the website I mentioned and locate item 13 under the Brake/Clutch/Gearcase/Motor/Pump section.
The motor coupling is located between the drive motor and the gearcase (transmission). It takes the place of a drive belt and commonly fails on Whirlpool manufactured top loaders due to normal wear and tear. This configuration is known as a "direct-drive" system. The replacement motor couplings are more resilient and resist breaking better, because the manufacturer added a steel grommet.

If you have any questions about this repair, or if you need additional assistance, please let me know. I hope you find this information helpful.

PS $11 for a do-it-youself repair, with instructions? I think this would definitely be worth your time and effort.

Does not spin

there is a coupling between the motor and gearbox, that fails.
it is a simple repair, and well worth trying

remove cabinet
  • pop off edge trims from control console
  • remove screwss from under edge trim
  • slide console forward and up ~1inch
  • flip the console over the back of the washer, the hinges are plastic and a little fragile
  • remove brass clips holding cabint inplace remember how they fit
  • lift cabinet ~1inch and remove forward
repair coupling
  • motor gearboxpump is at front bottom center
  • remove lock screw from clip holding pump to motor
  • remove two spring clips
  • pull pump off motor and swing sideways on hoses, tie off to left with a string
  • remove lock screw from clip holding motor to gearbox
  • remove two spring clips
  • pull motor off rubber coupling
  • pull nylon spider off gearbox shaft
  • pull nylon spider off motor shaft
  • install new spiders to shafts. Use a hammer to strike a wooden dowel on the center of the spider, dont hit the legs of the spider they break off

Note the new coupling spiders have metal centers to stop further breakage, common fault
  • turn gearbox spider 1 leg up two legs down
turn motor spider , 2 leg up 1 leg down so the spiders will interlock
  • install new rubber coupling on gearbox spider, install motor on coupling.
reassemble all clips and screws in reverse order
reassemble case in reverse order
on reassemble ensure plastic level sensing hose is not dislodged from water level switch body

takes longer to type than to do the repair
at parts store "Kenmore gearbox coupling" will get the correct part

Kenmore 80 will not spin, but does drain

Sounds like you have a broken motor coupling. Click on the following link for instructions on how to replace the coupling:

http://www.fixya.com/support/r385250-replacing_motor_coupling_kenmore_top

These instructions will give you the necessary information to take the washer apart to get to the motor coupling to see if it has failed. A tell tale sign is black rubber dust particles under the washer where the drive motor is located. Usually the rubber bushing shears apart, or the plastic tines break off the coupling itself. If the motor coupling is broken a replacement can be found at searspartsdirect.com. Just type in your model number and the coupling can be found under the "Brake/Clutch/Gearcase/Motor/Pump" heading on the next page as item number 13. The part number is 285753A. This is a very simple repair job. If need further assistance, or have any questions please let me know. For quicker responses to your questions, please go to my profile and use the "Ask Me" feature. If that is a coupling--2 white plastic pieces holding a rubber coupling? Rubber with three holes? If so, you need to remove 2 holding clamps to the water pump above the motor, separate it, remove two screws and 2 larger holding clamps of the motor, pull motor out and replace coupling...alingn motor and coupling onto gear, clamp it and return pump into its place.

I am new here, tried to post a photo of what I think you have but cannot just yet. Still trying.
