Just stopped working. Unplugged it to move the laptop, granddaughter used the laptop, got it back and the optic mouse doesn't work. Red light is on the mouse, green light is on the plug on the side.

There could be several other factors influencing the behaviour of your optical mouse. Have you tried cleaning the lens underneath and also used a contrasting mouse mat on your table?
The range of this mouse is very limited (3ft) and you might have some interference from other devices around (like cordless phone, wireless devices and so on)

Just to clarify, this is a wireless optical mouse, right? Please try the steps below:
1. Use fresh batteries. 2. Make sure that the mouse is turned on. 3. Check if there's a connect button on the wireless receiver and underneath the mouse. If there is, try holding down the two connect buttons at the same time for five seconds and then release them both. 4. Try moving the mouse. 5. Make sure that there are no possible wireless interference between the wireless receiver and mouse like the base of a cordless phone, cell phone etc.
If same problem occur after doing the steps below, then you may want to contact the manufacturer for RMA. This Microsoft 4000 has a three year limited warranty.
YOur mouse needs to be paired with the transceiver. THere is normally a button on the part which goes inot the laptop. Press it once then flip the mouse and press its button once. It will then work hopefully :)

rest/connect button on the bottom of the mouse and press it.
This should connect the mouse to the receiver and work properly.
