If this is the switch in the handle you are talking about then it has a short and has burnt out. If it is heating up like you say DO NOT USE the machine until it is fixed. It could give you a shock or maybe worse.
If you are not familiar with taking apart these machines I would get in touch with a certified electrolux repair place and take it to them or theyt may sernd someone to you. Please remember to hit the yes box on your way out if this has helped you. Thanks again and good luck!

The cord is attached to the handle. Putting the handle up is probably stretching or pulling on the cord. The cord may be bad or where the cord goes into the vacuum is called the switch. The cord may not be making go do contact with the switch, check these areas first

Faulty switch

Your 8650 is an old vacuum. The switch is in the part of the vacuum where the handle goes down into. When you push the lever on the handle it activates the switch. To get to the switch take off the dust cover, remove the three Screws on the small cover where the handle goes in to see the switch. On older Riccar vacuums like yours sometimes the screw holding the handle in is loose which can cause the switch to not Always engage properly. To test this turn the vacuum on and wiggle the handle. If the vacuum vacuum cuts out you may only need to tighten the handle screw.

Sebo has become erratic in electrical power and today I have sparking from the top of the electrical lead where the wire goes into the handle. Can this be fixed?

yes it can be fixed.

If you are handy or someone in the house is handy you may even be able to do this yourself.

All that is required is to remove the one screw out of the handle there near where the cord goes into the machine. Cut the cord off the unit about 2 inches from the handle.
Open up the handle and follow where the cord goes to, and disconnect the cord from the switch. Both the white and the black will go to the switch.
Feed the cut cord through the handle.
Bare off about 1 and 1/2 inches of the cord you just cut, bare off the black and white and replace onto the switch.
Reassemble everything and you should be ready to rock and roll again.

Good luck.

Shorten hose, Beam

If your Beam has a fixed handle RUBBER hose with switches and is deteriorating between coils, you can dismantle the handle (or wall end) with about 6 screws. If it has a swivel handle with switch it can not be shortened. If it is not switched and non electric, the cuffs simply unscrew and the vinyl can be cut and reglued with vinyl adhesive.
You will see once open the handle that the hose has fine wiring wound through its shell and this wiring controls the switching between the handle and the vac. You must unwind the hose from the inside handle stem, cut short with a utility knife and wire cutters and then screw the fresh hose end back onto the handle stem.
The hose should also be glued from the inside (after cleaning with a dry cloth) with a contact type cement suitable for rubber and plastic. Generally PLIOBOND is used.
Then splice your wiring and reassemble the handle.

My vacuum hose has split very close to the handle- how do I remove the handle, cut the hose at the split & reattach it to the handle unit - Centralux central vacuum system. Where can I find a diagram...

Do Not Cut the hose!
It has wiring inside to control the vac and power head. This is a swivel handled hose with both low and high voltage contacts in it. The same wiring which gives the hose its ribbing, is conducting current for two applications,
If your hose has a switched handle, a very experienced, trained AERUS Electrolux tech will a have a tough time doing this job and will likely refuse as it is not recommended per company policy.
You can purchase a shrink wrap tube which will prolong the life of the hose if it has not collapsed, however this is a short term fix.
I could walk you through this as I have done it before ...Unfortunately, even if you were able to dismantle the hose successfully you would not be able to purchase the wire terminals which you would cut off the end when shortening . Sorry its a proprietary part.

Can the damaged hose 8 inces from handle be cut then replace hose

If the hose is non-wired then you can fix this yourself. When you Plug the cuff into your wall inlet does the vacuum turn on automatically? If so then you should be able to trim the hose with no ill effects other than losing eight inches of cleaning area.

If the hose has a switch on it's handle that turns the vacuum on and off, you will probably need a technician to fix the hose. Some wired hoses even have High Voltage lines in them and should never be taken apart.

Vacuum Power Switch on Handle Doesn't Work

The switch is very cheap. I have the same vacuum. The solution is to stick a thin peice of cardboard under the slide track for the rod in the handle assembly. You will see the rod when you disassemble the handle for the sweeper. Move the on/off switch on the handle assembly a few times and look at the bottom of the of the assembly to see a thin black rod with cut grooves. This rod activates the on/off switch.

There is a little track that this thin rod of plastic travels along. However over time the the plastic rod begins to recess further into this track. The rod still slides but is now to far away to activate the on/off switch. This isn't very technical but just slide a thin peice of hard paper or cardboard between the rod and the slide track.

Make sure the red on/off switch on the sweeper is set to off. Put the handle back with the switch in the off position. Test the sweeper using the handle a few times before reassembling the screws. This fix may not be permanent according to how you have the paper/cardboard set between the slide track and the rod but it works very nicely.

Hope this helps! : )
