Hi,

Pls try to download boot98se.exe and thereafter it will automatically install itself to a blank diskette. That would then be bootable and usable as a DOS boot disk. If you are running some other Operating System, this page may help you with making a bootable DOS disk.

Hope this be of initial help/idea. Pls post back how things turned up or should you need additional information.

Good luck and kind regards.

Thank you for using FixYa.

Try running the Check Disk Utility.

To run the check disk utility you will need a repair disc ora operating system disc. Put the disc in the cd drive and boot fromit. You want to get to the Dos Command Prompt (Black screen with whiteletters) and type the following command: chkdsk /r
Check disk will run well over an hour or two and you will notice thepercentages going from high to low, this is normal. Let it run tocompletion. Then reboot machine.

If check disk fails to solve your problem you might have to reinstall windows.Try doing a Repair Install that way you don't loose your data, documents, music, pictures, videos or programs.

In windows xp you get to the dos command prompt by selecting R for repair whenthe options appear.

In Vista and Windows 7 you want to get to the recoveryconsole and look down at the bottom of the window for the Dos Command.

See if you can boot up into Safe Mode and restore it to a point before you gave it to your son.

You most likely can get a recovery disc from Gateway.
You can download the recovery disc and device drivers for yourmodel Gateway laptop from this WEB site. Make sure you select your model laptopand the correct Windows drivers. Click on this link to download the drivers: -

Will the 2009 recovery disks we had to purchase in 2010 for my son's laptop (lost operating system within first 5 weeks of purchase) work for my gateway w6501

In general, recovery disks are designed for a specific make and model of computer, or a narrow range of computers. This is required by Microsoft and others in order to prevent piracy of the operating system and bundled software.

As a result, recovery discs for one PC will not work in other PCs.

If the Gateway PC is still running, you may be able to create recovery CDs from it. If not, you can order the recovery CDs from Gateway.

I have a gateway ML6720: gets into BIOS OK, but won't BOOT

Upon starting up your computer keep pressing the F8 key. You will see the repair screen come up. Choose the line where you can use the c:/ prompt so you can do the following
When the black DOS screen appears type in chkdsk /f /r
answer Y and reboot
The computer will run a check and repair on your DOS system
When done in a hour or less reboot and see if it will operate correctly.
It is best to have a system reboot disc handy if this happens again. I would create one on a CD if this fixes your problem

to reformat, you have to boot from another source like a CD. you can't reformat a drive while it's being used, so get yourself an operating system disc and you can reformat/reinstall.

Gateway desktop

Only if it's not an HP labele operating system disc. Otherwise you will need an XP operating system disc, the HP recovery disc with XP will not work with your Gateway or any other manufacturer machine other than HP. The operating system on any manufacturer recovery disc is assigned to that specific manufacturer, so if you try to install from the HP disc it might install, but it will only give you thirty days, then shut down, or it won't install at all. It will be cheaper to purchase an XP operating system disc than all the software over again just for Viiiiiista!!! (I enjoy making fun of Vista) If you have anymore questions or need help feel free to ask.
