SOURCE: Blank white lcd
Yes, it could very well be a dead LCD unit. I have a LCD in a laptop in the office that has a nasty line running down through the entire screen. We contacted someone about replacing just the LCD portion of it and they said - don't bother. They said it would be more prudent to wait until it dies, and then upgrade to a new computer. It is the nature of the LCD units themselves, when they give up the ghost they give up the ghost.
The fact that you can see everything fine on an external monitor shows that you have lost your LCD. The odds of the cable inside the machine going bad are minimal/tiny to say the least. If they were exposed cables such that they could get crimped, then possibly that could be the culprit. With them being routed inside the unit, it is almost impossible for them to get pinched.
The only other option, and this only works if your machine is still under warranty, is to have HP fix it as part of your machines warranty. BUT, not all warranties cover the screen anyhow. The laptops I have bought required me to purchase insurance on the screen itself.
So, you'll have to determine if you can manage with the external monitor all the time or if you need a new laptop.
Sorry it is not good news for you.

I suggest uninstalling SP3... do you have System Restore turned on? Google how to check...
If you do, try rolling back that way. Start>Run>restore <enter> and the restore window will appear. Choose the restore to an earlier time option, and hopefully a choice for 'SP3 installation' will be there. Choose that to roll back... good luck!

SOURCE: HP Pavilion DV6700 won't boot
Possibly overheating? As you say that when you press and of the F-Key option nothing is happening, and also the fan is running at full power, if the fan is louder than usual, then it could be overheating in the air vents which you can find either at the sides, back, front and underneath the laptop, try getting the compressed air, and giving the air vents a blast to get all dust out. Or a vacuum. Do it whilst laptop is turned off though!

First you need to determine how many blinks you are getting when you try to power on the laptop.
Check the blinking codes below and reason behind that for HP Compaq laptops
Blinking battery power LED Battery Insufficient charge on the battery
Blink: 1 - Caps Lock/Num Lock - CPU CPU not functional
Blink: 2 - Caps Lock/Num Lock - BIOS BIOS corruption failure
Blink: 3 - Caps Lock/Num Lock - Memory Module error not functional
Blink: 4 - Caps Lock/Num Lock - Graphics Graphics controller not functional
Blink: 5 - Caps Lock/Num Lock - System board General system board failure
Blink: 6 - Caps Lock/Num Lock - BIOS BIOS authentication failure
Plz get back so I can suggest you the steps to resolve the issue.
