Hi there and Welcome to Fixya,

For some additional information that I would like to hear from you, I will need to know what OS - Operating System you are using on your Desktop, also the browser that your are using, is it Mozilla Firefox or Internet Explorer, if you are using a different type of applications browser please kindly let me know what it's name.

But first I can give you some idea which I think it can help you out on this problem.

On your Browser you are using, check if you have not set your browser into "Work Offline". When you're browser was set to work offline you are unable to view page or can browse any pages you like to visit.

You may know if you have enable the Work Offline on this following easy steps:

  1. On your Browser, Click the File Menu
  2. A drop Down list of menu will show
  3. Check/See that the Work Offline was UNCHECKED.
  4. If the word WORK OFFLINE has a check on the left side, click to that menu to disable it.
  5. Try to open and browse new site, check if you can now browse and have connections to the internet.
If the above steps, did not solve the issue let me know here again.

Thanks.
-TA

Sounds like a problem with your cable connection. Check your coaxial cable, and the splitter from where the cable enters your home. The tech will use a signal meter to measure the quality of your cable, and then replace the wiring if necessary.

Wireless broadcast is usually the first thing to go when a router is failing. How old is your router? Try these steps:
Turn off computer
Remove power from router
Remove power from modem
Wait 2 minutes
Restore power to modem
Wait for modem to boot up and gain all signals
Restore power to router
Wait for router to completely powerup
Watch for wireless indicator light
Boot up computer, verify your wireless network is broadcasting
Connect

If you still can not get the wireless network to access the internet, try connecting your computer with an ethernet cable. If everything connects fine and you can access the web, it might be that your router is going bad and needs replacing.

Try running the ethernet cable from the modem to port #2 on your router. Then run the second cable from port#3 on the router to your computer. This effectively uses the router as a pass-thru and bypasses all its functions. If you are able to access the internet this way, you need to replace the router.

Hi,

If you can access the configuration page of the router then check the IP configuration. Check WAN and LAN configurations. IP 192.168.1.1 or 192.168.0.1 will able u to access configuration page. Username and password hopefully be admin admin.

The cable internet is not "seeing" the computer. The router is blocking it. That is why it works if you plug it into the modem directly. How to solve this is to turn everything off and unplug power to modems and routers for 3-5 minutes. Then replug in routers. Then restart computers.

That is why it worked at the computer store. Everything was shut down and restarted.

Also, sometimes it is necessary to call the ISP (for example Comcast) and have them re-send the signal. Also going to Control Panel Network Connections and choose "repair the connection" will reset the signal.
Be patient it will work.

Ativa router

ok, fine....

Reset the Ativa router to factory defaults. This is normally accomplished by holding the reset button down for 10 seconds or more with power on for most routers.

Once you do that, you need to connect the computer directly to the motorola modem and configure it to be in "bridge mode".

Putting your modem into bridge mode means to bypass the router function and make it work as a simple modem. And, yes, if you do that then you must configure your wireless router to make the internet connection. If you don't want to do that, you can leave the modem as it is, I think the Ativa wireless router can still work even if your modem is still in PPPoE & you can still configure the router as an ethernet switch & wireless access point.

Now you can connect the router (after powering EVERYTHING down), turn on the modem, wait for steady connect, turn on the router, wait two minutes, boot the connected PC.

After you get a wired machine connected, you can enter the Ativa setup and configure the wireless security.

Open up IE or Firefox. On address bar, type in "192.168.2.1" and click enter.

Ativa wireless setup should load up. On top right, there is a Log In button. If this is your first time login in, leave it blank and submit.

Check up on the following: a) Internet WAN > Connection Type > select Dynamic; b) Wireless > Channel and SSID > Disable ESSID Broadcast, also set wireless channel to AUTO; b) Wireless > Security > set up your security, you should know what to do.

Now for the most important thing. Click Firewall, and DISABLE IT!! By doing this, it said that you'll will be vulnerable to hacker etc...blah blah, but with security keys to access wireless and virus program/window firewall should be enough to make you stop worrying. Apply changes, then the thing restarts.

*** also leave MTU setting to 1454 & set it to auto connect; leave the DNS & MAC settings alone; also leave LAN settings as it is.

i would greatly appreciate if you could give me the modem's exact model no. (such as SB4200, 2100 etc.) and the router's as well....
