Question about Gateway Profile 5.5 PC Desktop

1 Answer

I have a gateway profile 5.5. Sometimes it will turn on, boot up and then turn itsself off. Sometimes the power putton will not operate but if I unplug the power from the PC, it sometimes will then boot up. I had taken it to the shop but they said they could not do a diagnosis cause it PC would not srtay on but it could be the power adapter, fan, motherboard or all of the above. If it were the power adapter, that would be a matter of just purxchasing it and replacing ( if I could find one, eg AP14AD30 ) but if not that and I could not return, that would be money down the drAIN. Any ideas

You can have a shop try the power supply, they probably have some laying around. If it is not the power supply, you should look at system replacement.

My gateway profile 5 won't turn on. Checked plugs

Try to power drain it. Unplug all the power related devices that are connected, like a monitor data cable or external printer, just unplug all the cables in the back after you shut down your computer, press the power switch of your computer and keep it pressed for about 45 secs, release it, plug everything back and check it if its working. As well double check if that particular socket is usable, plug something else in to see if its working.

My gateway profile 4 desktop will not power on. nothing happens when I push the power button. measured 12v at the computer end of power cord. switch look ok. worked fine yesterday.

Hi,

Remove the power cord and then take out the battery. Hold down the power button for 30 seconds, then plug in just the AC powercord and try turn the laptop on.

If it turns on let it boot into the operating system and then shut it down and put the battery back in.

Hopefully this will resolve the problem but if it doesn't turn on again with the battery in there is a problem with the battery.

Post back if you need more advice.

Good luck.

My computer won't boot up and keeps going to a dos screen with safe mode and some other prompts. None of these prompts are working, the computer is trying to boot up but gets frozen. It then tries again...

your operating is pretty messed up. what you can do now is to use the Recovery Disk that came with the system to restore the computer to its factory default settings. you need to boot up the recovery disk and perform clean install.

I have a gateway Profile 5. when i cut it on

My understanding is that when you power on your PC, the POST is succesful, but then the system hangs.? If i am correct. There are several reasons this may happen.

1) Boot record corrupt
S) Reformat the harddrive and re-install operating system / replace hard drive

2) General Hard drive failure but boot record instact
S) Replace Hard drive

3) Operating system inoperative
S) Re-install operating system

Most pre-built systems come with recovery disks, you may try this as a solution if available.

When replacing a defective hard drive, or partialy inoperable hard drive, a good policy is to change the drive to slave, and install the new drive as master, this way any data you may be able to recover, can be done after the new hard drive is installed, and an operating system is installed on the new drive.

(POST = Power On Self Test)

Profile 5 shuts off on its on

Sound either like a Overheating or a Power Supply Unit issue. You may need to clean the thermal gel off the CPU and heatsink with a small amount of rubbing alcohol and apply new gel. Make sure your fans are working correctly and make sure there isn't any dust under the fan on the heat sink it self, as this will cause overheating issues... Also, if you suspect the PSU you can usually get a nicer one than you have now for $50, so it is better to go ahead and replace it if it is old. The pop sound makes me lean more towards the side of power / PSU but this sound could simply be from the hard drive lossing power suddenly.
