Question about LG RC199H DVD Recorder/VCR

1 Answer

My LG RC199H DVD/VCR recorder combo does not recognize video DVD's. It reads DVD's with jpeg pictures on them and plays CD's but not regular old video DVD's. Is this something I can fix? The VCR portion works fine.

Cleaning the laser with a Q Tip and alcohol is a method I had already tried from reading previous posts. This did not work! I have two of these units doing exactly the same thing (reading everything but a video DVD) So far, no FixYa. Any other ideas short of replacing the entire drive?

These are things most of us with this problem already know. I don't consider this a fix. Thanks anyway.

Hi,

This suggests a problem with the laser pick up on the unit which is failing to read the video DVD.

This may be down to a fault with the laser or a misaligned pickup but quite often it is caused by debris such as particles of dust or even the slightest accumulation or film of dirt can cause the laser lens to malfunction.

You can either clean the lens using a Q-tip and some isopropyl alcohol but this will involve opening the case on the unit to gain access to the lens or alternatively use a DVD cleaning disk such as this one.

Simply insert the disk like a normal DVD and it performs a cleaning action to the laser lens.

The Q-tip method is usually more effective but is more involved. The cleaning disk is effective on a slightly opaque lens and the disk is not expensive so you might want to try this first.

Hope it helps. Thanks for using FixYa

Unfortunately in this case replacing the drive is the only solution.

Also, these particular units do not seem to be very reliable when it comes down to failed lasers and drives. You would need to consider whether it is economically viable to proceed with a replacement drive and then the risk that it may fail again after a short time.

    Thanks.

I am sorry but what what would you consider a fix in this situation? Divine intervention?

The unit has a faulty drive which is the bottom line here. The cleaning of the lens has not worked and this particular model is known to have unreliable drive components. In fact you have two of them yourself with the same complaint which supports that in your own experience.

The fix here is to replace the drive if you want to make the unit operational again. If you choose not to replace the drive that is up to you. The unit will remain broken until you replace the drive. There is no easy push a few buttons solution.

So with respect, the fix has been outlined but you are choosing to disregard it.

Avi format files reading problem

I think its due to lack of supporting files. Normally there will be some files in the DVD other than the .Avi files. Try making a new DVD with a well known DVD making software like Nero or video editing softwares like Ulead,Adobe Premier etc.

Clean the DVD lens with isopropyl alcohol (rubbing alcohol) and a Qtip. Be careful not to press down too hard. Gently clean the lens all around. Changing Qtips if you see anty signs of debris or dirt on the tip.

LG RC797T Won't read disks

I had this problem last year. It had to be sent back to the company to replace the entire dvd unit; however, I found that it probably had been caused by electrical surges. Once I got it back after repair (replacement) I put the best possible surge protector I could buy on it and have not had a problem with that issue again. The idea of a surge problem came about because I blew 3 Onkyo stereos while still in warranty several years ago and they did the same thing- would not read discs, would say no disc, etc. & the protector ended the problem.

Recording to DVD recorder

I know you can copy to the VCR. but do not know if digital recording has any form of copyright protection. You can try to copy by connecting the outputs of the DVD TV to the inputs of the DVD player recorder.
