I had the same problem on an MFC 5840CN that uses the 900 cartridges. On the back of the cartridge is a sloping section that protrudes. This fots in between a light sensing device that determines the ink level.
What seems to happen is that the light sensor goes wonky. It could be dirt
When you remove the cartridge the light sensor isn't picking up any light so the machine doesn't know that you have removed or changed the cartridge and therfore doesn't reset the print counter.
It is fiddly and difficult to get at which makes cleaning it awkward. I have just used a torch with great success.
Removed the cartridge, shone a torch on the sensor, used my finger to close the "lid open switch" and the display asked If had changed the cartrdge. Hey presto!
The only down side is that the machine may not sense when the ink level is really low. I don't know if the machine uses the light sensor or pre programmed count to determine this or a combination of the both.
Good Luck and this should get you printing again.

How do you reset Canon PIXMA MG3500? it reads a refill ink cartridge as empty

Manufacturers do not like it when you refill their ink cartridges so they design their printers and software to mess with you when you refill cartridges. If you check the matter on google you will find the work around for your particular printer.

Epson Stylus NX415 does not recognize ink cartridges. Cartridges are Epson 88's. Worked for awhile, and then stopped recognizing them. Tried powering down the printer, cleaning the cartridges, turning...

Epson Printers are sensitive in terms of Ink Cartridges.. The latest Epson Printers does not have ink reseter.. Ink reseter are already built-in on the ink cartridges.. The problem on this printer is when you have a cartridge on your printer, let say, 30% of the ink level, even though your ink is new, and you change it without using the right ink replacement method, it will recognize your ink as a 30% ink level. When your ink level drops to 0%, but you have remaining 70% of the ink, it does not recognize it anymore. The chip on the ink cartridge is already registered as an empty cartridge.

I have replaced black ink cartridge 73N message on screen says Error i press ok to proceed message goes back saying replace ink cartridge?

The main problem in using the latest Epson printers, is the ink replacements. Ink cartridges like 73N has its own ink reseter (the little chip in front of the cartridge). Once you replaced the ink without using the right procedures, for example you have a 10% remaining ink level on one of the cartridge, and you replaced it without using the setup menu and selecting the replace ink cartridge, even though the cartridge is new, the printer will read the replaced cartridge as a 10% ink level cartridge. When the remaining 10%, drops to 0%, your cartridge will read as an empty cartridge. The chip on the cartridge is registered as an empty cartridge.
-try to replace the ink reseter or try to clean the cartridge chip then put back the ink.

I have an HP F4580 printer, and have just refilled both ink cartridges. However the printer won't allow me to print as it thinks the ink has gone. How can I reset my printer to display ink cartridge...

Often they have a chip mounted on the cartridge which monitors usage and when it determines that there is no ink remaining, it will disable the printer. Some companies sell compatible cartridges and reset the chip counter. But unless you reset the chip, even tho the cartridge is full of ink, the chip still disables the printer.

E04...how to setle it

That error means that an ink cartridge is empty. To cancel printing, press the Stop/Reset button. To continue printing, press the OK button. After the printing finishes, replace the empty ink cartridge. Printing with an empty ink cartridge may cause machine malfunction.
You can read more about the error codes on Canon website: http://support-au.canon.com.au/contents/AU/EN/8000137001.html

I refilled HP 88 cartridge but printer (Officejet Pro L7590) still thinks cartridge is empty. How do I reset ink level?

Under the cartridge is a black like pump - on a new cartridge this is hard and rests firmly on an area inside your printer. As you print, the pump becomes softer - this is how the printer determines it is empty. Once refilled, the pump does not get back to the original state. Open the bottom of the cartridge and put a firm solid piece of folded paper in there - make sure it is steady and re-close cartridge. It will now read as full but may also show full - judge ink levels by the quality of print. Also make sure chip has not expired.

Ink cartridge continues to read replace after

There should be a setting in the printer controls or print manager software that will allow you to reset these. Did you purchase new, or did you refill the ones you had? The computer reads the code on the back of the print cartridge and will recognize it as the same one you took out and will register it as empty even though you just filled it. The refill kits come with instructions on how to resolve this issue. Remember, if all else fails, read the instructions!
If you installed NEW cartridges and the printer management system doesn't have an option, try simply uninstalling the print drivers and reinstalling them.
