  • Joe Caton Oct 10, 2010

i just really scrubbed the condenser as before the back side of it was still clogged. would a dirty condenser cause the coil to freeze?...how much effect does the cardboard back have?

Freon can stay as long as possible in a refrigerator depending on how you use it and the necessary operating condition of the refrigerator. I have seen many people find themselves in the same position you are now. You are not the first and definitely not the last. I also have a fridge at home now, less than 3 years with the same problem of not cold enough which i found out was related to freon issue.

An insufficient Freon charge is one of the last things I consider when troubleshooting a refrigerator that does not cool. FREON LEAKS OUT; IT DOES NOT WEAR OUT. It is unlikely that your refrigerator will suddenly start leaking just sitting in your kitchen UNLESS it is manual defrost and you recently removed the ice from the freezer compartment by using a knife, screwdriver, chisel, or pry bar and punctured the aluminum evaporator coil or an incompetent service person installed piercing-valves that are leaking.

Conditions which may seem like lack of Freon but are not:

  • Evaporator fan not running which ices up the evaporator and raises freezer and fresh-food compartment temperature.
  • Condenser fan not running which raises temperature of freezer and fresh food compartment.
  • Dirty condenser which raises temperature of freezer and fresh food compartment.
  • Defrost problems (if automatic defrost) which ices up evaporator raising temperature in freezer and fresh food compartment.
  • Old compressor with worn valves that raises evaporator pressure and temperature.
  • Worn door seals that allow hot air to leak into the freezer or fresh food compartment (Note: Some Haier refrigerator doors won't seal even when new.)
  • Clogged filter dryer or capillary tube which keeps the Freon from circulating properly.
All the above conditions make the compressor run continuously or almost continuously, but so does a lack of Freon. The compressor runs continuously because the refrigerator cannot reach the set-point on the cold-control. Keep in mind that if you set your cold control to mid-range and it can't cool to that setting, turning it to max (which asks it to make the temperature even colder) does absolutely nothing.

    SECRET
The fastest and easiest way to find out if the unit has Freon is to turn it off and listen. When a compressor pumps Freon the evaporator pressure decreases and the condenser pressure increases (thus we have a high and low side of the system). When the compressor stops running the refrigerant pressures in the system slowly equalizes through the capillary tube. This can take several minutes. Turn the cold control to the off position and put your ear to the side of the unit. If you hear hissing and gurgling noises the unit has some Freon, which is the unit. If you hear hissing and gurgling noises the unit has some Freon, which is equalizing through the capillary tube (it may not be a correct charge). If you hear nothing, the unit contains little or no Freon or has a clogged filter-dryer or cap tube OR the compressor is running but not pumping (worn or broken valve). None of these conditions are as likely as having a defective fan, dirty condenser, or defrost problem.

Hi, no the Dirty condenser cannot make that happen. It could make it warmer Than it should be in both the freezer and the ref though.

When the freon flows through the coils in the freezer it picks up heat and when that heat gets to the condenser it is released through the coils. If the coils are filthy the heat cannot escape efficiently and the freon cannot pick up as much heat in the future thus warming the freezer and consequently the ref.

Any progress? Hope am making sense.......

3 possible things... your door isn't sealing tight, causing warm air to get into the fridge which makes the moisture build up and freeze onto the coil. If it is an automatic defrost type, there is a problem with the defrost timer or the defrost heater. Or it could be low on refirgerant, which will cause the coil to freeze up....

This will definitely help you sort out the situation....

And since you are complaining that the refrigerator is not cold enough and the coil is frosting up, it is obvious that the refrigerator is low on freon

( Remember if the refrigerator is low on freon, it will cause the coil to freeze up and the refrigerator will not cool enough)...

Hi,

There is a complete guide you could follow. This is written in simple words and cover the major part that does not require a tech.Look at :-

http://www.fixya.com/support/r3886637-refrigerator_not_cooling_enough_or_not

To inspect the freon, there is a nice article :-

http://fridgeman.wordpress.com/2008/06/08/simple-ways-to-know-if-your-fridge-is-low-on-freon/

It is made in 2004, so freon should be fine unless there is a leak. This could only be determined by a special instrument which is available with licensed tech.

Let me know,if needed further assistance.

Hope i helped you.

Thanks for using ' Fixya ' and have a nice day!!

    Thanks for your response!!

I would be glad to help you in determining the cause. However, you need to have experience in repairing appliances as you need to take all the precautions.

If your thermostat is good, then the only possibilities are either the
control board or the heater itself. You can check the heater for
resistance it should be between 10 and 40 Ohms if it's good.

Let me know and i would help you further. Kindly tell me the readings.

    Let me know,once done.

    Hope i helped you.

Thanks for using ' Fixya ' and have a nice day!!

Nine y/o GE side by side not getting cold enough

More likely a defrost heater. Look inside the freezer at the back wall. Any frost there? If so, turn off refrig., unload freezer, take back panel off inside freezer, and use a hair dryer to melt off the frost. Replace the defrost heater located at the bottom of the frosted coils. (New heater may appear different than original, but instructions are included) If you don't have the defrost heater on hand, just manually defrosting the coils and re-starting the refrig will get is cooling again for at least a week before problem will re-occur. (this give you enough time to get the replacement part)

Freezer not cold enough to freeze items solid

Here are some things you can check yourself. Does it run all the time almost non-stop? if so check the vents under the front of the frig and make sure they are clean. Aslo check the condenser coil (either in back of the frig,or under the frig)Make sure that coil is clean. The condenser coil has to have contact with the outside air in order to release the heat it removed from inside the freezer.
Make sure you frig has plenty of ventilation ( wall too close on sides and back) Hope this helped. If not then you should have a pro look at it.
