Question about Whirlpool GB9SHDXPS Stainless Steel Bottom Freezer Refrigerator

1 Answer

I have a whirlpool gb9shdxpq bottom freezer fridge. It stopped getting cold in the fridge part so i started troubleshooting. The freezer was still frozen and the frost is what was causing the fridge to not have any airflow. I used the force defrost through the control panel and that has fixed the problem but the freezer is freezing up again. Before i change the control panel what other testing should I do. i already know I can force it into defrost mode so what does that prove besides the element being good. Any help is appreciated

Part 5 in this diagram is your electronic control which controls the defrost cycle. Like you said you know the heater and the defrost thermostat works. So the control is all that's left.

does the thermostat have to be good to use the force defrost function? 130 dollars is a lot to spend on the control board so I need to be totally sure. I also did the thermostat and defrost circut diagnostic test through the control board. With everything all iced up it show the circuit was shorted (closed) It flashed on the open for half a second then went to shorted. What does this prove. thanks

If the defrost thermostat is bad, it can prevent the heater from coming on OR it won’t turn the heater off when it gets too warm. It is clamped to the evaporator coil at the top to sense the temp. If it appears to be misshapen it is bad.
With an ohm meter it should show continuity when cold and none when warm.

Hello, We have a Whirlpool Gold bottom freezer

I don't know about Whirlpool refrigerator freezers, but my Amana has a temperature control in the freezer that regulates the overall cooling, and then the control in the refrigerator compartment controls how much of the total cooling is sent to the refrigerator section. My advice would be to lower the temperature setting of the freezer, and see if the temperature lowers in the refrigerator as well. Also, you can go to the Whirlpool website and they can help you further.

Freezer works, fridge doesn't cool

Probably excessive ice in the condensor. Likely defrost thermostat or defrost heater problem.

What happens is excessive ice keeps airflow from the refrigerator part of the unit.

Freezer not freezing food and fridge not staying cold enough

Check the compressor with a volt meter, if the compressor is getting proper voltage then check the relay. But this sounds like a problem with the compressor

Whirlpool bottom freezer - freezer working but fridge not cold

Hi check to see if the unit has 2 compessors! If so then remove the plug from the mains and remove the thermostat housing in the fridge compartment and join the live and common wires together and switch on! It then should start to freeze down. Just get a new stat if this happens and replace it. Becarefull not to bent the log capilary wire as this has a liquid in it and any kink in the wire will mean you will be buy another one..
Good luck....
