Question about GE Refrigerators

Open Question

I have a GE Model PSC23MG Refrigerator. The freezer section does not get cold enough. Starting several months ago the refrigerator was noiser than normal. I appeared that the noise was coming from the evaporator fan in the freezer section. The excessive noise stopped a month or so ago but it sounds like the evoporator fan is still running. The temperature in the freezer is barely cold enough to freeze items in the freezer. This also has caused problems with the ice maker because the ice partially melts and becomes a big ball of ice.

SOURCE: fan runs constantly, freezer ice melting, bottom drawer in refrig

  • If your refrigerator temperature is closer to 35 degrees, try turning the temperature up slightly.

  • If you find that the temperature varies a lot from the top shelf to the bottom (where it is coldest), try putting produce and other sensitive products on a higher shelf.

  • If the temperature is too low and you can't make it warmer by adjusting the thermostat, you probably have a defective thermostat. If so, you need to replace it, because they cannot be repaired. Other possible problems are a leak in the sealed (refrigerant) system, cold air migration (in side-by-side models) or a defective air damper. These problems can be quite difficult to locate and correct, we recommend you contact a qualified appliance repair technician.

    SOURCE: GE Refrigerator/Freezer not cooling

Loss of coldness is common with compressor related problems....relay and overload(simple fix), loss/leak of refridgerant(need a cert. tech). need to check the compressor and see if its running....do this by pulling the unit out and removing the back panel, place your hand on the compressor and see if it feels like its running....if not probably just a relay, if it is running, could be a more serious problem dealing with sealed system.

    Freezer fine, fridge not cooling

This sounds like a small Freon leak. It could come from cleaning the coils, or movement by the compressor. A technician with a gas tester (locator) can find any small leaks and repair that section. The cost is not excessive and a new unit is over $1000, so consider the options.

Freezer is cold but not keeping icecream frozen.

If, the fresh food section is 34- 38 degrees, then the freezer should be cold enough to keep ice cream solid. All of the cooling capability comes from the freezer section. I, personally, would not waste time or money on a ten year old box. Ten years ago it cost $1000, so, the outlay is $100 per year. Dump the old refrigerator and get a new one.
