Question about Gaggia Coffe Deluxe Coffee Maker, Espresso Machine

1 Answer

Boiler stopped working

While we were on vacation our housesitters used our espresso machine and when we returned the machine does not heat up. The green light indicating correct temp never comes on. Naturally no steam. Pump still works but the water is lukewarm. I opened the top and stared at the wires--looks fine and nothing obviously broken or melted.

Any ideas?

Hi I have posted a service manual and a parts list here

It sounds like the boiler element or maybe the thermostat. You have to take the top part of the machine off to get a good look at the water boiler.
I have uploaded a not very good strip guide that I got from the internet, I have used it but it makes thing overly complicated to my mind, but here it is anyway.
https://rapidshare.com/files/3189994876/KES100_strip_guide.zip

It has written instruction that relate to two diagrams in the PDF.

You can do one or two things;
1 - Increase the pressure stat to 1.3 bar,
2 - Raise the water level in the boiler for more thermal mass so that you do not lose as much heat when the machine adds water to the boiler.

Hi
If the machine turns on and cycles normaly your heating element is probably gone, but if your machine is less than 4 years old you may have a thermostat that can be reset. They are located on the side of the boiler (round boiler and hard to get to) and there is a reset button between the wires going to the thermostats (2). Push the button and listen for a faint click. That may help, but not guarenteed.

Red boiler light will not go on. The boiler does heat up.

Open the steam valve when you turn the machine on that will vent out the boiler, keep it open until it starts to hiss slightly and produce small steam bubbles, then close and machine should heat to temp. If that solves your problem then the vent valve needs to be replaced, until then you can turn using the steam valve open trick.

Not building pressue

Water damage to the flow meter can cause the machine to not function at all. We have seen water leaking from the water tank leaks right on the flow meter and stops the machine from heating and contining its start up proceedure.

Steam jet in Saeco Classico

Try Descaling your machine. A lot of times calcium will form on the inside of the boilers and on the heating elements in espresso machines causing heat transfer issue and clogged lines.

If the heating element cannot transfer enough heat fast enough then your steam will run out.

If you need a good descaler or descaling instruction visit www.CeriniCoffee.com
