Your problem sounds like drum rollers have flat spots on them or in need of lubrication, or maybe your drum belt has slipped off of the idler arm pulley.

Note: This method works with most front loading machines.

Remove the electrical console that holds the timer switch, start switch, etc. from the top of the dryer.
Note: Some tops hinge and tilt backwards so they do not have to be removed and the electrical console with stay with the lid.
Also remove the lint filter and the screws holding the lint filter housing in place.
Be REAL CAREFUL not to knock any of the wires off of the timer switch. Then remove the top of the dryer.
Remove the front of the dryer. This will expose the drum and belt. Remove the drum and belt and this will expose the drum rollers, idler arm pulley and motor. Now is a good time to replace the front felt seal on the drum if it needs to be replaced. Be sure to use a good grade of weatherproof cement on the seal to glue it to the drum, sometimes the glue is furnished with the seal.
Now is also a good time to check the belt to see if it has slipped off of the idler arm pulley and also to check the belt condition for wear.
Be sure to note the route of the belt, this will come in handy when you go to reinstall the belt.
Check your drum rollers for flat spots or wear, if they have flat spots or wear on them replace them.
If the drum rollers don't have flat spots or wear on them then they probably only need lubrication. Lubricate the shaft of the rollers with a good grade of machine oil such as 3 in One oil. Reassemble the dryer, plug back in. This should solve your noise problem.
The rollers are not very expensive, for your parts go to:

My whirlpool gas dryer makes a really loud thumping noise while it operates like rocks are in it.

Check the tub rollers and front seal on the tub.
One of the rollers has probably flattened.

Whirlpool YWED8500SR dryer making a thumping sound during each revolution of the drum. It's only 3 years old and it's leveled.

A thumping is usually caused by a drum roller that has a flat spot on it. It is an irritating sound for sure. The parts required to silence the beast are here and reasonable in cost:
I recommend getting the kit because it comes with a new belt and 4 rollers vs a single roller below.

You can get just the roller here at half the cost. (we are talking roughly $15.00 vs $30.00 for the parts above)

In all my years of experince the drum rollers have been the culprit every time there was a constant thumping complaint. Make sure the drum roller posts ' shafts are cleaned very well before installing the new rollers.

Dryer makes a loud thumping noise when running

A thumping sound in your dryer could be caused by a flat spot on one of the drum support rollers. It can also be caused by a problem with the drum. An idler pulley on for the belt on the drive motor can also make a thumping noise when the dryer is running. Check to see if the cabinet is properly leveled with 4 feet firmly on the floor. Push down on opposing corners to check for play. Adjust the leveling legs if necessary.
Without a model number of your Whirlpool dryer, I am not able to provide much more help. If your dryer has the lint filter that pushes down into the top panel of the dryer, then here are a few tips for accessing the inside of the cabinet:
  • Unplug the dryer to disconnect electrical power.
  • Pull the lint screen out.
  • Remove the screws that secure the top panel to the lint screen housing.
  • Use a putty knife to release the clips on the front of the top panel (about 4" in from each side) that secure it to the dryer frame.
  • Hinge the top panel up and back.
This will provide to access to the inside of the dryer cabinet. Manually spin the drum in a counterclockwise direction and see if you can determine the source of the noise. If you need more help, resubmit your question with additional details and the full model number of your Whirlpool dryer.

Noisy drum

You may have a rear drum support issue. There are 2 rollers,(supports), 1 at 4 o'clock and 1 at 7 o'clock. If the bushing in the roller becomes elongated,(elliptical), it will give a thumping noise, as you describe.

Constant "thumping" sound when dryer is going

you can fix it by ordering a whirlpool roller kit but its no big deal the drum sits on rubber rollers when it just sits the rolers get flat spots on them like tires and makes the thumping sounds its just noisey but no big deal but they do make a kit with softer rollers

Thumping in kenmore dryer empty or full

Usually this is a symptom of the drum roller supports going bad. Some model dryers have two rollers, while others have four. I need to be sure. Please post back with your COMPLETE model number (located around the door opening) and I can give you better advice and provide you with part numbers.

PS If it IS the rollers, this is not an expensive repair.
