Question about Sony Playstation 3 (PS3) Console

3 Answers

My ps3 controller is not charging. Whenever I try to charge it, a message comes up saying " The maximum amount of power has been reached, please remove one device. The only "device" I have is the usb charger. When I connect the controller to the charger, it will not connect and the message repeatedly shows up.

This is likely the result of a defunct battery. They are relatively easy to replace (though some models are easier than others to put back together). Generally it is not the fault of the USB cable if the system is still able to communicate with the controller. However, if you have not already done so, you will want to attempt to charge the device using a wall charger, your PC, or any other charging mechanism available that is not the console. I would actually avoid the PC if at all possible as very few motherboards out there have the ability to charge anything at a decent rate.

If you want to replace the battery, you will need the model number when you search for the item. I have replaced parts in two DualShock 3s that were different versions. One I replaced the battery, and the other I replaced one of the analog sticks. With those two controllers I recall that the connector linking the battery to the PCB were different sizes.

You will not need to do any soldering or anything to replace the part. There are numerous YouTube videos out there (and other walkthroughs) that will take you through the process step by step. Again, it is not complicated, but reseating the triggers can be a bit of a trick.

I apologize, typically I would provide links to where you can find the item for sale, and a link for the repair walkthrough. You are better off querying for these with the specific model number. Although the controller breakdown will be pretty much the same... it never hurts to be looking at someone working with the exact same item you are handling.

Good luck!

Ok, all jokes aside, Poohbear_swe, it would help to know the model number of your controller. This can give you a design date of manufacture that was released with a particular system. (PS3 Fat-SLIM-SUPER_SLIM) I purchased my system new when the slim version of the system first came out. Unfortunately, the controller that came with it just suddenly stopped working after about 1 month of using it. There are several ways to fix the issue you are having. Firstly, and I hope this one is the problem, try a different usb charging cord. They are readily available and very cheap. Secondly, if you are using a charging dock, disconnect the dock and plug straight into the controller. (I'm assuming you did this already) When you plug the controller in, if it not connected or powered on to the system, you should get all 4 lights flashing showing that it is charging. If you have the controller powered on with the system, then the channel(1-2-3-4) should be the only one flashing. If the controller is not faulty, then it should connect with the usb cable connected. This will also bypass the bluetooth connection. Again, the issues are usually with the cheap cords that come with the system. It's the easiest part to check. Now, to the nitty gritty! If your system powers on, and you've tried different usb cords and the controller still refuses to connect, then it can only mean 1 of 2 things. #1) Time for a new controller. Ask a buddy if you can try one of their controllers to make sure that is the problem. #2) IF(I hope not) IF, your system turns on, and you've tried one or two different controllers and none of them will work???????Then your USB ports on the system, for whatever reason has become either very dirty, or disconnected/broken on the inside. This will require some surgery on, and opening up of the console. Don't worry if the battery is good or not, it will connect with the USB cord even if the battery is completely removed. I will put a link to ebay where you can check out some controllers and cords. Good luck, and I hope this helps. ^^ Also, when buying a controller for the PS3, make sure it's a good one. The link I'm giving you is to the controllers that I use every day.

Try pressing and holding down the PS button and see if any menu comes up.

If noting then you will have to contact the controllers manufacture for further assistance. I believe at this point the controller is no longer functional.

My controllers wont sync to the ps3 or charge on it but they charge when i plug them into the PC. i had the "Maximum power reached" message thing plop up then my ps3 crashed and now they dont...

yea i have noticed my ps3 isn't charging stuff either it only does charge when its turned on im pretty sure theres a setting to charge while the ps3 is off To sync:
  • Connect the USB cable (provided with the controller) into the data USB port on the top of the controller. Insert the other end of the controller into one of the two USB ports on the front of the system.

  • Power on the television and the Sony PlayStation 3. You are going to see a series of lights flicker on the top of the wireless controller.
  • Press the PS3 button in the middle of the controller. This tells the gaming system it is connected. A single light appears on the controller.
  • Remove the gaming controller from the PS3. You can now use it wireless. It is also possible to remove the USB cable from the PlayStation if it is blocking your field of view.

    Controller USB not working?

Flip the controller over, and press the reset button. It's to the right of the middle-top screw ps3_controller_reset.jpg. You'll need something like a paperclip, toothpick, or something similar to push the button. Once you've reset your controller, connect it to your PS3 with a handy USB cable, and press the PS button (just like you did when you first got the controller). Now, it is paired again, and you should be OK.

    Grabbed this from Kaivarri. Thx!

    Ps3 controller

I was having the same problem. Controller would only work when plugged in.
Solution: I shut down and unplugged the PS3 for several minutes. Plugged in the controller. Turned on the PS3 and let it boot up. Pressed the PS button on the controller and let it sink up. When I unplugged the controller it worked.
