Question about Brother MFC-685cw InkJet Printer

1 Answer

I need help please, I have a Brother MFC-685CW and it does not print black. I have tried the test page, as well as many other pages (online and off) and the black doesn't print. All the cartridges are new and full, I also tried different paper and different settings on the printer. The printer did sit for awhile (about 6 months) with no usage. All other colors work fine. I also removed and reinstalled the software, still doesn't print black. Any help would be appreciated, Thanks Scott

Sounds like the little "micron"sized hole in the PRINT HEAD is plugged. if it has a purge or clean cycle like the 465c that might work. usaully soaking in denatured alcohol is the way. i dont think the printhead is accessible to humans or mere mortals like us.

usally the instructions recommend dont turn off printer

Mfc-495cw will not print black

If this is an inkjet that the nozzle for black is probably clogged and needs to be cleaned with a q-tip and rubbing alcohol.

The black cartridge (Brother LC51) doesn't print on my Brother MFC 685CW. The other 3 cartridges print just fine and passed the Print Quality Check. Running clean cycle doesn't help

In order to print in Black and White using grayscale, you will need to adjust the printing preferences within the driver. To change the printer properties complete the following steps:

1. Open the Printers Folder:

  • Windows 2000: Click Start => Settings => Printers.

  • Windows XP: Click Start => Printers and Faxes.

  • Windows Vista: Click the Start button => Control Panel => Hardware and Sound => Printers.

  • Windows 7: Click the Start button => Devices and Printers.

2. Right click on the Brother printer driver and left click Printing Preferences.

3. Click the Advanced tab.

4. Select Grayscale.

5. Click APPLY => OK. Your printer will now print in grayscale.

Brother MFC-685 will not print in black, not even on test page. But will print when i scan print

You almost certainly have a defective printhead. When you make a color copy or print, the machine makes black by mixing your color inks.
If the machine is under warranty take it to an authorized service center (listed on Brother's web site) for free repair. If it's just barely past warranty, call Brother's Customer Support and plead for mercy. They often bend their rules to help a just-past-warranty customer.
If they won't cover it, steel yourself for bad news. The parts are expensive, and the required updates and adjustments are a time-consuming pain. You'll probably be told it costs more than a new machine. Good luck.

Black cartridge doesn't print

you need to do a hard reset on the printer as well it might clear up the problem and recognize the ink at its proper levels.

refer to your user manual or let us know and we will find the procedure to do so.

i have a similar model and know how picky they can be.
