Please list the 9 digit model number that is under the seat so I can pull up a diagram. You could pull up the same diagram at searspartsdirect.com. If you still need help let me know. It is best to remove the dash board on top to access and most have a snap clip holding them in place. Need the model # to verify.

Paula, what are you calling the tension arm? What is this "arm" suppose to do? What is it that you are trying to accomplish? You may be taking the steering wheel off for nothing. I just can't visualize what you're looking to do, or what is wrong with the machine. You have a steering wheel, steering shaft ext, steering gear assy which has the steering shaft in it, a drag link, then a tie rod. I added a link to a similar type tractor for reference.

I have a sears craftsman riding lawnmower 5 years old. It will steer only hard to the left and will not turn to the right. the steering wheel turns but the mower does not. any suggestions

I had the same problem with my 15 year old Craftsman lawn tractor. I tried to adjust the steering travel but it gave me marginal relief for a year until the steering failed with my steering wheel spinning freely and the wheels free to go left and right. The left bias for steering indicates that the steering shaft pinion weld was shearing prior to failure.

I took the steering apart and found that the drive pinion gear was sheared off the end of the steering shaft at the weld. I replaced the shaft and sector gear to fix this issue.

This fix requires good amount of mechanical disassembly to get the replacement parts in place so you might need to go to a shop to get a mechanic to fix this if you aren't set up for this kind of fix by disconnecting the mower deck and jacking up the front end to access the steering gear assembly and steering arm links.

Look under the seat of your tractor and note the complete Model number.
(usually begins with 917. _ _ _ _ _ _ )

Next, go to THIS PAGE and use the Model Number to find an exploded view of the steering components and how they assemble.

Hope this helps,

18hp craftsman riding mower model#917.255913. won't turn left!

I have had this problem for the longest time. I replaced the secondary gear twice. Helped for a brief period and now won't turn left again. Replaced the steering shaft and worked for a brief period. Back to no left turns once again. The issue is with the secondary gear and bearings (plastic) which is only a temporary fix. What I had done was welded a piece of steel to the bottom of the steering shaft eliminating the secondary gear connecting directly to the tie rod for the steering. Works perfect now.
