Question about Office Equipment & Supplies
That is a very bad sign indeed. It means the print head of this unit has some serious hardware failure going on. It is repairable but is nowhere near cost effective. It is less expensive to just replace the printer unfortunately.
If you think it may still be under warranty please contact the manufacturer to file an RMA. If you happened to purchase the printer with a major credit card (not a debit card) there is a good chance it may still be under the free extended warranty most credit cards place on electronics. Please contact your credit card company to inquire if they do this, and they will be able to file the claim and get you a refund for the unit.
Otherwise I'd suggest you just replace it, there is a special going right now on a Canon all in one printer, with built in wireless, only $86 shipped, no tax:
You may be able to still return that ink cartridge for a refund as well, just tell them it simply didn't work and is definitely the right model for your printer. They should take it back.

I will advice you Press and hold the "Resume" button on the printer. Press and hold the "Power" button while holding down "Resume."
Release the "Resume" button. Press "Resume" twice. The indicator light will turn amber followed by green.
Release the "Power" button. Press the "Resume" button four times.
Press the "Power" button. The printer is now reset, and your printer should work fine.
