This doesn't sound like something that you can do yourself. Find your nearest authorized repair center and have it checked out.

Bobbin thread will not catch unless the foot is down?

Ashleigh--Your machine will work satisfactorily ONLY if the presser foot is down. When the presser foot is up, the tension disk is released, therefore, no tension = a big knot of thread.

To free motion quilt, you should drop the feed dogs. Install a darning foot (this foot is shorter in length so when it is lowered, there is a space between the presser foot and needle plate). The space allows the fabric to be moved easily while stitching.

Some sewists will free motion quilt without a presser foot (if they don't have a darning foot), but that is very dangerous as one can easily sew through a finger. However, even when sewing without a presser foot, the presser foot mechanism needs to be lowered in order to properly form stitches.

How to change sewing for different thicknesses

First, you will need to select a brand new needle of the type suitable for your fabric. Select a proper thread weight and type for your needle and fabric.

Select the proper presser foot for your project/fabric. On some fabrics, you may even want to use a straight stitch needle plate to prevent the fabric from going down the needle hole.

You will want to adjust the upper tension so that the upper and bobbin threads meet in the middle of the fabric.

Also, probably want to adjust the presser foot pressure so that the presser foot presses harder or lighter (depending on the fabric) so the fabric will feed through evenly, ie both the top and bottom fabrics move together at the same rate. Hint: if it is really thick, like sewing a quilt with batting, a walking foot may be helpful.

Be sure to test on scrap fabric from your project before beginning sewing your project together.

All About Needles

Why is there an extra needle plate supplied with my machine Brother straight stitch plate and presser foot cannot be used with zig-zag or decorative stitch or you will surely break your needle and possible knock the machine out of time!

Loud thumping noise CS-6000i

hmmm... Can you determine where the thumping is coming from?

In my experience thumping like this is because something has gotten out of time. You might be able to see it if you take the bobbin, and needle plates off. Take off the threads, top and bottom and you might have to take out the bobbin carrier too. Making sure to understand how it goes back in. Take off the presser foot and any presser foot holder. Locate the shuttle point. Hand rotate the machine in the direction it normally turns (NEVER backwards) and watch what the needle does. Does the needle hit the shuttle? Does the shuttle bounce up and down?

You also might try grasping the presser foot bar and the lever at the same time. Check for play of the bar by gently moving the presser foot bar up and down while "feeling" for unusual movement.

Even if you determine the issue... you'll need to take it in for repair. There are no publicly available service manuals for your machine (or my brother for that matter)

You also might want to check your bobbin for rough spots, use very fine sand paper to smooth them out if you find any.

Husqvarna Designer 1 noise and thread breaking issue.

I would be willing to bet that there is a piece of thread wound around one of those pieces below the bobbin area. Get your magnifying glass out and have it a good long look. When you find thread... use tweezers to pull it out.

I have a 9960 singer machine and am trying to use the buttonhole presser foot for the first time and I can not get it to sew T

the buttonhole foot snaps on to the presser bar, there's a little lever at the back of the presser bar that releases the foot, then put the buttonhole foot down on the needle plate & use the presser foot lifter (number 11) to lower the presser bar down onto the buttonhole foot & you'll hear a click sound when it snaps on & make sure to use the buttonhole lever(number 31) because the machine won't sew a buttonhole unless that lever is pulled down.

My machine makes a "knocking" sound.

Needle bar probably catch the presser foot, because it does not return the the right position. Clean and oil the presser foot assembly. There is no tension adjustment there. It should move freely about 1 cm.

I am wondering if I need a throat plate to sew. Everytime I start sewing, it gets clogged up and makes buzzing noises. I cut the tight threads, start again, and then it happens all over again. So, Is there...

Yes, you need the throat plate, Somehow you are not threading it right. Do this, change your needle, flat side facing away from you, totally rethread, with the presser foot up, pull the threads, it should move smoothly, now put the presser foot down, the thead should barely move when pulled. This normally will seat the thread in the tension discs. I don't know what else to try without being able to see the machine.

How do I move the presser foot on a Husqvarna Viking Emerald 116 sewing machine?

Not sure what exactly you need to know. Are you trying to lift the presser foot or change the presser foot to another one? If it is lifting, there will be a lever of some kind behind the machine. On one of my Husqvarna machines it was a big flat "paddle" shaped lever, not sure what shape it is on the Emerald machines. Lift the lever from the bottom upwards and outwards. Most Husqvarna machines have clip on-and-off feet. You just gently pull forwards on the foot (while the presser foot is raised) to remove it, then push the new one on making sure the small bar part of the presser foot goes into the clip on the presser foot ankle.

Viking Designer 1 presser foot will not stay down

The foot should come up slightly above the fabric when in embroidery mode. If not, the fabric could not move.
The foot should come up the same distance that it would if you were to put the foot in the pivot position while sewing. If it is coming up more than that, then you have a problem and will need to see and authorized technician.

Make sure you're using the correct foot for the stitch. Is this during sewing or embroidery? Take off the bobbin plate using the screwdriver and remove the bobbin. Make sure everything is clean under and around the shuttle. If you've ever broken a needle the tip might have fallen down into the mechanism and occasionally be jamming it.
