My vostro 1500 won't boot up until password is entered

On that white page it gives you a service tag number, write it down. Mine is a combo of upper case letters and numbers with a - 585B . now go to http://bios-pw.org/ and enter your tag number - (do not enter the # sign in front of it) it will generate a master password based on your service tag number, write it down. If you do not have a Dell you can still utilize this program except for IBM and a few other exceptions but it covers a lot of them. Enter the generated password ( there isn't a spot and you can't see the characters on screen you just have to punch them in) It takes you to the bios set up menu where you will need to enter the generated password again so make sure you write it down. From there you can change all your passwords! Good Luck

Looks like you have a harddrive problem.

It may be temporary, or the HDD may have failed completely; the latter may be for multiple reasons: impact, overheating, induced electromagnetic field (like a cellphone put in immediate vicinity of the drive), or just bad luck.

With such problems it's always a tough choice:
- try various methods of recovering the drive, reinstalling the system and so on, risking that the drive contents will be even harder to recover by a professional data recovery company
- or leave it as it is and seek professional help.

If you don't have anything so important on the HDD that would justify the big $$$ needed for data recovery, you can try various system recovery tools, and if they fail, just replace the harddrive with a new one and reinstall operating system from scratch.

Of course, if your laptop is still under warranty, you should call Dell for a warranty repair.

Help to break admin password

The only ways to bypass the setup password on this mode are:
  1. Contact Dell Technical Support (800-624-9896 USA), verify you are an authorized user of the system and they will assist in generating a Master Password to access the system.
  2. Replace the Motherboard http://cgi.ebay.com/Dell-Vostro-1500-Laptop-Motherboard-WY041-Tested_W0QQitemZ350285431102QQcmdZViewItemQQptZMotherboards?hash=item518ea3813e#ht_2280wt_1235

Turn on my Dell Vostro 1500 and all I get is a black screen

Remove and re-seat your RAM cards. Remove your battery but leave the power supply attached. Try to start. If this doesn't work, your motherboard has died and needs to be replaced. Not a do-it-yourself job unfortunately.

Is fairly easy, but be extremely careful of the ribbon cables, they break very easily!
Good Luck!

Booting to Operating System

Have you tried booting from CD? Does it still happen? If so, your RAM might be damaged. Or it might be an overheating problem. Check the fan outtake for dust.
