Picture tube became weak and if you increase/ adjust gain of Blue gun, picture result can be improved.

Tv sounds like it turns on but no pic no sound and none of the buttons on the set work but there is static on the screen for a sec. and then it seems to be turned off

You have several bad capacitors in your TV. There are in the deflection side of the board. I think there are three here. And check the vertical section, as there are three bad caps. You will need an ESR meter to find and replace these capacitors. The older Zenith are known for shut down due to weak and bad caps. Hope this clues you into the fix. Thanks for asking and show a few hands of support!

This tv needed CRT Tube discharge.Take the tv aparts, take out the CRT video board, must plug it back in."Highvoltage becareful",find a wire with good insulations, grounded itself in with a screw from a steal frame.High voltage "Take that wire go close to the CRT tube without the video board connect in.Than u will hear a pop, that the highvoltage, just discarge ur CRT bad contamination. The tv should be clear now, after putting it back together again, getting it working.

Replace the whole board, the IC shorted can't distributes the voltage evenly, that why u keep getting burn out capacitors.Might got some things, else where burn too.Becauce keep replacing the same part that is not the main cause of the prob.

Absolutely not worth repair. You have described a classic symptom of Zenith picture tube failure, and about 99% of the time the main board in the TV is ruined as well. You've gotten good life from the set (manufacturers figure tube life is around 7 years these days), so it's time to replace it.

yea i have seen this b4 there are 3 driver transistors on the main board by large ic, if you follow from the crt board back you will see wires going to what i am talking about, now you really need a meter and some know how, measure the 3 transistors , they will be side by side, look for the one that has a different voltage then the other 2, replace it nte 159 is a good replacement transistor for the driver transistor here. if you take to shop should be
60-100$ fix. hope this is some help and not to confusing .

I believe you have a shorted transistor on the crt board on the back of the picture tube which should be Q5104. Let me tell you my experience with these Zenith's The original problem is the picture tube shorting out and caused this problem. If you replace the transistor the same problem could arise again because of the tube and it could even knock out the main board power supply. I have seen this happen. And I have put in the transistor and no problem. You can get one at the Radio Shack by taking the bad one out and get them to cross reference it for you. All Zenith transistors have a prefix number (not on the transistor) which is 121- (with the dash!) and the number on the transistor The new one must go back in the way it came out! I recommend someone with electronic soldering and desoldering experience. Hope this helps

Zenith model SM3587BT mostly blue

Hi,
I'm not sure of the model but most Zeniths of the 1990's the picture tubes would burn out soon. However there is one that has a transistor short usually from emitter to collector on the main board. Just trace the wire ribbon that go close to the big chip on the main board. There close to the chip are three driver transistors in a row and one of them could be shorted from emitter to collector usually. Use the number on the transistor and put prefix 121 dash and the number to cross it out. I think not sure but it may be a NTE 159 PNP. I have changed many but the picture tube is not like new after changing. If this is not the model then you probably have weak green gun in tube. Hope this helps.

Sorry to be the bearer of bad news bud, but thats the beginning of the end for your picture tube. The tube is what the industry calls a soft picture tube. On a set like this it wouldnt be feasable to replace unless you get a good deal and or you realy like the set.
