That would be your lid switch that has went bad.  Remove the console caps, then remove the two screws that hold it down (sometimes these screws are in the rear of the console)  Rotate the console out towards you gently, then fold it up and over the top of the unit.  You see 2 gold colored hold down clamps on top, and either side of the unit.  You will also see a wire and disconnect going down through the cabinet on your right hand side.  Disconnect these wires (be sure unit is unplugged) and rotate the whole cabinet towards you.  You remove the two screws that hold the switch in place and a 5/16" screw underneith that holds the ground wire.  Unclip the connector from the rear top of the cabinet and remove the switch.  Be sure to bring your whole model number 110.************** when you get the new part, there are two of these, and they look the same except the wire ends are different.  Good luck    Jim

SOURCE: kenmore model 110 gear case

you were able to get to the coupler??? if so youre were half way there. first off you will need a gearcase and a clutch assy. 1/2 socket , 7/16 socket adn maybe a reg screwdriver.start by removing the agitator from within the tub, after getting hte fabric softener dispenser off there is an opaque handled cover to remove, the you will see a 7/16 bolt remove it and the agitator will come off, set aside you may also have to remove a small white plastic(something or ohter) with a piece of steel (sorta like a cam/ lock)willlift right off the gearcase, next remove the cover and the pump and disconnect the motor so as you now have access to replace motor coupling.. you ll hten need to tip machine back and remove the (3) 1/2 inch bolts mounting the gear case to the underneath of of the machine and the gear case will now fall right out( litle persuasion never hurt anyone!!, the clutch will mount to the new gear case, and there are detailed instructions as to how in the withthe part

This problem is commonly attributed to a lid switch malfunction. The lid switch is mounted under the washer top casing, on the right hand side on most top load models. It is activated by a plastic piece on the lid (called a "Lid Strike") through a small hole on the rim of the wash tub opening. In many cases the lid strike breaks off the lid, or the lid switch becomes loose and no longer makes contact. Inspect the lid to make sure the lid strike is still intact, and then inspect the mounting screws (adjacent to the small opening on the wash tub rim) and make sure they are snug.

A replacement lid switch can be purchased on line at for about $25. The part number is 3949238. Just use the "Search by Model Number" feature when you go to the site. If you do not wish to order on line, take the part number provided to your nearest appliance parts retailer. This is a very common part that they should have in their inventory. For instructions on how to replace a lid switch, you can refer to this link: If you still need assistance, please contact me and let me know. I hope you find this information helpful.

First, see the Sears Parts Site for your washer:!retrieve.pd?pop=true&modelNumber=110.24422300

Newer model Whirlpool / Kenmore washers use a Lid Switch as a safety device. Unless the switch senses that the lid on the washer is closed, the washer will neither agitate nor spin.

Older models only used the switch during the spin cycle.

Try to bypass the Lid Switch by removing the Console and jumping the two outermost pins on the switch.

Following is a description of how to release the console for access to the pins.

This is a Whirlpool PDF on how these washers operate. It has a diagram on jumping the switch as well as a detailed section on how the transmission works.$FILE/L-55.pdf

It also has a troubleshooting guide.

To bypass the switch, you only have to disconnect the power to the washer, tilt the console back, unplug the switch and using an short piece of insulated wire, jump the two outermost contacts on the connector coming from the console and plug the washer back in.

Following is a description of how to gain access to the console and how to remove the cabinet if necessary.

With the jumper in place, try to re-start the washer.

If it works, the Lid Switch is a relatively inexpensive part.

Broken Washer

it could be the direct drive coupling that connects the motor to the transmission. fill it up with water and see if it will agitate, if it will NOT agitate then it is a good chance that this is the problem. 0404472.jpg

worse case scenario is the transmission is bad, but this is unlikely.

If your washer fills, agitates, drains, but will not spin, the likely cause is the gear case (transmission). A new gear case can run about $200 just for the part. With labor, this could be a bit expensive to repair. I hope this helps you some.
