Unfortunately the gentleman who answered your question is incorrect. I have tried all of the above and I still find myself with the Ethernet controller driver missing. I have however, tracked it down to an Atheros WIFI driver. Just need to find the Win XP version. Also I am using a different model then you are, and may not share the same hardware.

You've got a strange issue here!
Once you get the Ethernet-card running, you go online and it should automatically install. Let Windows find your divers for you.
Otherwise - in Device Manager; find the item you want to upgrade, uninstall it, refresh, and in the top bar menu - click on "search for harware changes" and then check the little square that asks you if "Windows shall connect to and search on the Internet".
The driver for the ethernet card most probably (must) will already be in your new Windows-installation.
If this does'nt work I've NO other clue!

Unfortunately, you will need to purchase another operating system disc, even though you have the product key. That key is assigned to the disc that came with the machine. Why exactly did the Xp disc of your father's not work?

Problem with the modem

You shhould be able to right click on it in device manager and select enable, or press F2 or Del on boot up and enter the bios and look in the menu for your modem and select enable. If non of above work, right click again on your medem in device manager and select delete. Restart the laptop and let windows find your modem and it should automatically install the driver, if not when the option window pops up to manually install driver, point windows to the cdrom that the drivers are located on.
