Is it possible for the defrost timer in a Maytag refrigerator to be bad yet not have a frost problem?

if the fridge doesn't go into defrost then there WILL be a problem..
Without defrosting, the fridge will working for up to 1 week before the fresh food section gets warm but there will be a problem for sure. So short answer "no it's not possible".
Your problem could be that the relay is ok but the compressor is too hot..in that case the overload protector will prevent the compressor from running and you might here the clicking and buzzing.

My refrigerator broke i think it is the ice maker unit i would like to find out if it is that or something else

Good day,
An ice maker is an accessory. It would not cause the refrigerator itself to not function.
Here is a list of the major reason a refrigerator will not function.
I don't know what you mean by "broke".

Items that will cause a refrigerator not to cool.....
1. Defective thermostat
2. Defective freezer fan motor
3. Defective defrost timer
4. Defective defrost thermostat
5. Defective defrost main heater.
6. Defective condenser fan motor
6. Defective compressor overload protector
7. Defective compressor start relay
8. Defective compressor start/run capacitor (some models only)
9. Defective compressor
10. Restriction in refrigeration sealed system
11. Loss of refrigerant (leak)
12. Excessively dirty condenser
13. Broken wires, bad wire harness connectors, etc.
14. Defective fan motor switch (some models only)

Fridge noise/

You need to get a repair man to your house ASAP. This noise you are hearing is the compressor start relay and the click sound is the overload protector heating up and shutting it off. You may have a defective relay, or possibly a bad compressor. The relay and overload are attatched to the compressor in the back of the fridge.
Check your owner's manual to see what kind of a warranty you have on the "sealed system" Hopefully the parts at least will be covered should you need a new compressor.
Sometimes if the compressor is bad on these models you can let it sit un plugged for a couple hours and try to re-start it.
Good luck to you!!

My frigidaire is not getting cold. Is there a way to troubleshoot to detemine if it's the compressor gone bad?

Good day,
Here is a basic checklist any qualified tech would use to isolate why a refrigerator won't cool.
Items that will cause a refrigerator not to cool.....
1. Defective thermostat
2. Defective freezer fan motor
3. Defective defrost timer or electronic defrost control.
4. Defective defrost thermostat
5. Defective defrost main heater.
6. Defective condenser fan motor
6. Defective compressor overload protector
7. Defective compressor start relay
8. Defective compressor start/run capacitor (some models only)
9. Defective compressor
10. Restriction in refrigeration sealed system
11. Loss of refrigerant (leak)
12. Excessively dirty condenser
13. Broken wires, bad wire harness connectors, ect.
14. Defective fan motor switch (some models only)

As you can see, there are multiple reasons a refrigerator won't cool, or cool properly.
To zero in on the compressor might take you away from the true non-cooling reason.

However. The compressor might have a defective relay or thermal overload that would prevent it from starting or running. Theses items can be removed from the compressor and taken to any appliance parts houses. Most all would be glad to test them for you.
As well, the compressor could have a bad valve internally that would prevent the compressor from pumping refrigerant, or there could be a restriction in the refrigeration lines preventing the refrigerant from circulating properly, or the windings in the compressor could be burned out or shorted, or lastly, the system could have developed a leak. All of the above compressor related issues, except for the first one could only be checked by a qualified tech.
I would treat the problem as a whole with the compressor being one of the potential issues.

Not to throw a monkey wrench into this but a refrigerator is like a car.
9 out of 10 times the problem and solution are obvious. It's that last 10% that take all the training and experience.

Not getting cold on both side refigerator .and the ice maker is not working.

Good day,
The ice maker locks out if the machine is not at normal temperature.
So the cooling system has to be repaired first.
Here is a list of items on a standard refrigerator that would prevent it from cooling.
1. Defective thermostat
2. Defective freezer fan motor
3. Defective defrost timer
4. Defective defrost thermostat
5. Defective defrost main heater.
6. Defective condenser fan motor
6. Defective compressor overload protector
7. Defective compressor start relay
8. Defective compressor start/run capacitor (some models only)
9. Defective compressor
10. Restriction in refrigeration sealed system
11. Loss of refrigerant (leak)
12. Excessively dirty condenser
13. Broken wires, bad wire harness connectors, ect.
14. Defective fan motor switch (some models only)

So you need to give us some idea how it is acting.
Is it running ??
Are there any unusual noises and coming from which part of the machine ??
Was the failure instant or over an extended period ??
Is there frost or ice building up in the freezer compartment ??

Please be detailed as possible.
The list above is what a trained service tech would use if he made a service call to the house.
A refrigerator is not a simple device.

How to locate and replace defrost timer. Seems to stick in defrost mode.

Your unit is not a self defrosting freezer and consequently has no defrost timer. There are only four components required for cooling in your unit. The temperature control, behind the knob in the cabinet. The compressor at the back bottom. The start relay and overload in a box attached to the compressor. The run capacitor attached to the start relay. A failure of any of those will cause the compressor not to run.

Check the wall outlet to be sure you have power.

If the compressor IS running but not cooling, the compressor itself may be defective or the gas charge may have leaked out. Compressor and refrigeration problems are likely beyond your capabilities in terms of knowledge and equipment.

The temperature control may be tested by all connecting the wires of the control to ONE terminal after unplugging the freezer and marking down teh original locations of the wires. If the compressor runs and cools after this by-pass then change the control and return the wiring to the original locations.

If the above does not make the compressor run the next possibility is changing both the relay/overload assembly AND the run capacitor. If these fail to correct the problem you need a new compressor but you will likely NOT be able to return the parts replaced.

Good Luck

Blowing hot air. Compressor not kicking on. Where

Possibly three things, either a thermostat problem, starter relay/capictor, or a bad overload protector not closing after an overload. The starter relay should be behind a black box located on the side of the compressor.

Compressor and Compressor Fan Not Working

Rotate the dial on the defrost thermostat, a big click is when it goes into defrost, a little more and it should turn the compressor back on. By overload protector, do you mean the one under the compressor cover?
