For months, my refrigerator side won't cool below 55 degrees and losing food. but the freezer side is icing up and won't shut off. repairman replaced the vent air flow thing between the freezer and refrigerator twice and the thermostate twice. said they have no idea now what's happening. Has anyone else had this problem? Can anyone offer any suggestions?
thanks!
I have repaired my Sears refrigerator/freezer many times since I bought it in 1971. Recently, the refrigerator freezer section started to ice up and the temperature in the freezer started to slowly rise to about 20 degrees F and would not go any lower.
This happened once before and it turned out to be a defective Defrost Timer.
This time the problem was a defective Bimetal (Temperature Switch) that shorted against a metal tube in the refrigerator.
I replaced the Bimetal and now the refrigerator is fine - no frost and it now goes down to 0 degrees F, as it should.
I have taken a series of photos of the problem and repair of my refrigerator plus a schematic diagram. Follow this link for all the photos.

Also, make sure that you don't cover any holes or vents that are in the freezer section
It sounds like your defrost system has failed. There is a timing device that turns on the defrost heater(s) which may have stopped working. Or the heaters or defrost thermostat could be bad.
My suggestion is to find a different repair person who is qualified.

In the refrigerator section on the upper left side where the air comes in, ice starts to build up and it doesn't cool properly after that. This has happened repeatedly for 1 1/2-2 years. Now it is happening every couple months. I have emptied it out and left it empty at room temperature numerous times for several days to let it completely thaw out. Apparently some kind of blockage developes in the coolant circulating system. I had a repairman come 3 times. He put a heater in the line somehow, but that didn't solve the problem. I've tried to be careful to not block the air flow. The freezer is impossible to use and not block the flow somehow. I'm so leary of this thing, that I avoid opening it unless I absolutely have to. It's so tempermental. It's the first major appliance I've bought new. What a lemon!
