Question about Microsoft Xbox 360 Console

1 Answer

Hi, I was trying to clean the memory chips on my xbox 360 elite's motherboard -- cause I had put some thermal grease on them, but I forgot that thermal grease remover (Arctic Silver) should be put on any form of RAM. Not, when the machine boots, I get 4 rings of death -- all wires are connected and the machine hadn't given me this error before cleaning. Please assist me with this issue, thanks!

Hi 4 red rings means the video lead is not put in the back of the console properly so take the leads out and try them again.

if they are fitted correctly switch it on and when you get the flashing red lights do the following

when all lights are flashing hold down the little white round wireless button and keep holding it down whilst you do the following.

whilst holding the button down press the eject button on the console then write down how many red lights are lit up.
then hole the white button down again and press eject and write it down, you need to do this 4 times and it will give you a code that you can give to me and i can then tell you exactly what the fault is ok

so it will be something like this
4 red lights
4 red lights
2 red lights
1 red light

let me know the code then i can tell you exactly whats wrong and what you need to do to solve the problem ok

Hi, I'm sorry about that, it was three lights, not 4 light. The error code I got was:
    4 red lights
    1 red light
    1 red light
    4 red lights

    Thanks for the assistance!

Hi that comes back as error code E20 which is telling you that their is a problem with the ram its more than likely cold solder or cracked solder.

if you have taken it apart have you removed the 2 heat sinks and refitted them with new paste,

try this open the case and take the top case off so you can switch it on with the top case off, then just before you switch it on push down on one of the ram chips and switch it on and see if it will work if it dont try the other ram and try again.

if after doing that it still hasnt worked then this means the rem chips need heating up so you can reflow the solder, this is not easy to get right how ever, you can do it with a heat gun but you need to know how long to do it for, the problem is to heat them up you need to remove the heat sinks from the gpu and cpu and also take the board out of the base as the ram's are on top and under neath they are in the same place but four under neath and four on top these really need doing in a reflow station thats what i use but if you go to google search and type this in
how to fix error e20 on xbox 360
then hit search this will then list loads of sites that will give you some idea of what you need to do if you are unsure of what you are doing and dont want to risk damaging it further then you need to find someone who can do it for you, i charge 20 quid to do this but you can be charged up to 40 so shop around, most independent market stalls will be cheaper and some phone shops offer this kind of repair service.

google it first and if you have got a heat gun then you can give it a go but you need to be really carefull not to over heat them to much some people put coins on top of the ram they wrap them in tape then place them on top of the ram chips as this will push them down and should fix the bad solder.

you know the flat heat sink well if you have ever take this off then you can see the 2 rams that sit at the end of this well if you get a couple of washers, plastic ones are better to use the type you get with the xbox 360 rrod repair kit and stick one washer on top of each ram then when you refit the heat sink and tighten it up this will push the 2 ram chips down and should fix the problem, but if you have never taken the heat sinks off then dont try this as you could cause the gpu to over heat if you put it back wrong.

please dont mess with it if you are unsure or if you do use google and get a good guide otr watch a couple of vids that will be in the list when you google the error code

let me know if you need further assistance ok

the heat gun is hit and miss and you can damage parts on the circuit board so please please be aware of this before you attempt anything ok

Xbox 360 Console: how do i clean the gpu chips in a xbox 360...

there is a special fluid that dissolves yours thermal compound already on your chips and then you wipe it off and repeat and your chips will come up nice and clean can't remember the name but Google it should be easy to find and make sure you use some atic silver for thermal compound don't use rubbish otherwise it wont last trust me i used to do like 20 a week and evenly spread it you don't need a lot and secure your heat sinks well as i am guessing your trying to do the x clamp mod to fix some red lights and it should work 9 times out of 10 it does but there is always one though so good luck hope this helped

Tip

XBOX 360 ULTRA-FIX

having repaired Many X-Box 360s.
The following points have been noted, And greatly reduced further rrod occurances.

Removal of the X-Clamps, and replacing with High Quality Thermal Grease Or Compound certainly helps.

The renewal Of Better Quality Heat-Pads, On The 4 x underside memory Chips, is also another Big Factor.

Also where the GPU heatsink sits, over the top of 2 x memory chips.
use thermal pads of 2mm thick, which greatly helps, Protects heat from the chips, when the GPU gets warm.

My Final And probably biggest Tip, Is to use a very fine sandpaper on The Underside Of The CPU And GPU heatsinks, before replacement. These Are Factory manufactured, And not as highly precise, or polished as they Should Be. I use a sanding Block, Some Fine 600-800 grit wet And Dry, to polish the fine lines out Of These, And polish to a mirror Finish With T-Cut. Or Car Rubbing Compound.

Completing all the Above, makes The 360 More Efficient Than It,s Original Production. Also the Addition Of A Talismoon Fan, moves More Warm Air Faster.

I have xbox360 elite modd.mfd 2007-10-16.now it shows e73.

it was a bad idea modding your xbox because in order to do so they have to remove a special chip or rewire so the chip is skipped.this chip stopped your h77 turner lap from over heating which is what has happened causing it to leak.you need a new UNMODDED xbox oh and whatch that liquid it,s highly acidic

My xbox 360 doesnt want to read disc

Hi,
You can solve this issue by cleaning the motor bearing. You have to open up your xbox and take off the cover to your drive. Then plug it back to see what the disc is doing. Just go ahead and remove the motor, clear out the old grease, re lubricate the motor and put it back together.
Thank you!

3 of 4 rings were red, now no lights at all

ok the three red rings was lit to notify you that your board, cpu and gpu have experienced a significant source of heat. So much in fact you really should bring it to a repair shop. I see these at least 4-5 times a day your 360 needs to be disassembled and the heat sinks removed this will allow you access to the cpu and gpu both sides of the board need to be heated with a equal amount of heat to heat up the solder and reseat both chips.

My xbox 360 elite has the e 74 1 red light problem, is there a fix ?

this problem is mostly with elites. your scaler chip is damaged. now you can wrap a towel around your xbox and overheat it, making your scalerchip stick to your motherboard, but you would have future problems. i would recommend getting it repaired by a warranty if you have one. if you dont, i would do the towel trick.

1 red ring flashing on xbox 360 elite e73 stated on the tv tried xbox customer service centre unconnected all accessories reconnected one by one still a problem got this feeling it is the ring of death is...

e73 is a simple one to fix, ive done loads and they are the exactly the cause or the same as the e74 and to fix you need to strip your machine down and re-heat the solder points especially concentrating on the back end of the motherboard near the ANA chip and ethernet chip.

ive been warned not to provide guides on helping you but just to say you can find step by steps on the internet free.

I have one red ring on my xbox360 elite its on the 4rth controller port how do i fix it please tell me

Try the following resolutions in the order in which they are listed:
  1. Turn off your Xbox 360 console, disconnect and reconnect all cables, and then again turn on your console. If this step doesn't resolve the problem, try step 2.
  2. Turn off the console, and then disconnect any connected accessories, such as controllers, Xbox 360 Memory Units, and the Xbox 360 Hard Disk. With these accessories removed, restart the console to see whether the problem persists and to pinpoint whether the problem involves the console or an accessory. If this step doesn't resolve the problem, try step 3.
  3. If you continue to experience the problem, contact Xbox Customer Service.

If the Xbox Customer Service agent cannot help you resolve the problem, you may have to return your Xbox 360 console to Microsoft for repair. For more information about how to contact Xbox Customer Support or to request repair of your Xbox 360 console, please visit the Xbox Support (http://www.xbox.com/support/) Web site.

the towel trick is def only temp. i called xbox and they want 100$ to fix it. I am going to either threaten to call bbb ( better business burough) of actually file a report if they won't do anything about their faulty hardware. I think that everyone else should do the same.
