Question about Nikon COOLPIX S52 Digital Camera

1 Answer

When I connect my camera to my computer, it appears to be empty. I have over 1000 photos on it which show on the camera screen, but the computer sees none. I have even tried downloading the drivers and 'Nikon transfer' package from the disk that came with the box. I am using windows xp. Why does my computer not read the camera? When I open the S52 folder in my computer, there are no files. When I then press 'get pictures from camera' it says that the camera is in use. What am I doing wrong?!

Have you considered NOT connecting your camera to your computer?

The best way to download pictures from your camera to your computer involves removing the memory card from the camera and plugging it into a card reader (either built-in to the computer or connected via USB or FireWire). This is likely to be faster than connecting the camera to the computer, and won't run down your camera's batteries.

Once the card is plugged in, it will appear to your computer as a removable drive. You can use the operating system's drag&drop facility to copy pictures from the card to the computer's hard drive. Or you can use Nikon Transfer or any other photo cataloging program.

First of all, why on earth would you keep 1000 pics on the memory card? They are not meant for storage....they can be easily corrupted and you could lose your pics. You need to get a card reader and use it to download your pics. Then, format the card in the camera for a fresh start and download and format on a regular basis from now on. ALTERNATE WAY TO TRANSFER PHOTOS TO COMPUTER
If your photos are stored on the memory card, then remove the memory card from the camera and insert it into an USB memory card reader. Connect this USB memory card reader and memory card into the USB port of your working computer. Your computer will see this as an USB Mass Storage Device or an external storage device; you can then open the folder on the memory card and copy the photos to your computer. Memory card reader is a handy device and is inexpensive. You can copy photos from other cameras and you can also download photos off your memory card to someone else's computer without the need of installing any programs.

I have GE C1130 and it has a tendency of losing pictures . When you go on the viewing part it shows empty. Also shows empty when you hook it to a computer. I haven't deleted anything. Last time the pics...

This is a formatting problem (in other words, it's likely you did not format the card in your camera when you first got it). First thing to do is back up all photos from the card onto your computer. Afterwards, format the card IN THE CAMERA using the camera's format feature. This will correct the problem from reoccurring in the future, but will also erase the card! So again, only do this after backing up your photos.

My Digital Camera Will not upload software

i think you are correct. Likely you are haveing a software compatibility issue. i am seeing this as a recurring problem. This problem is probably too complicated to solve here, so i will offer a work around: You may know this already, but you don't need the camera to upload photos. I rarely upload from my camera. You should be able to do so, but until you figure out the problem, remove the SD card and use a SD card reader. If your PC doesnt have a built in SD reader, get a USB version like the SanDisk MicroMate or get SD with a built-in USB plug(see attached photos for both. When connected to your PC, either will show up as a removeable drive on your PC from which you can copy the files onto your PC's harddrive: save the photos, back them up, then use the camera to format the SD card--this is the best way to clear/erase the card. Then try opening the photos. Using the camera to upload photos, in my opinion, should only be done when you do not have a way to read the SD card. This can be the begining of a productive workflow and part of the process for organizing and backing up photographs.
