Question about Sharp AL-1641CS Laser Digital Copier

1 Answer

We bought a new cartridge for our AL-1631 copier. Up until the time we installed the new cartridge, we never had a problem with this copier. Now the copier indicator light is telling us that it needs a new cartridge. I have shaken and thumped the new cartridge a multitude of times hoping that the toner was caked. For a few times, that seemed to work, but each time the copier is shut down and we try to make copies, we get the same indicator light that tells us that the cartridge needs to be replaced. We have probably only made a couple of dozen copies on the new cartridge, so we know it's not empty. Any ideas? There seems to be a 'clicking' sound that should stop when the copier is warmed up, but it just keeps clicking until the unit shows the indicator light warning of an empty cartridge.

Sounds just like an empty cartridge. There is a bar with a long spring on it inside the toner cartridge. As the machine tries to add toner the bar "scrapes" the toner while stirring it in order to ensure all the toner is used. When the chamber is empty or near empty you can hear the spring making more or less a thump thump kind of noise about every 5 seconds or so. If this sounds like the noise you are hearing then it sounds like the toner chamber is empty. Did you buy this cartridge locally? If so you may be able to return it. Was it refilled? Remanufactured? or was it in a OEM Sharp Box with AL100TD or similar on the box? It sounds like either you got a bad/empty cartridge or the only onther possibility is, and I actually had a customer do this once, was accidentally put the old one back it the machine. Pulled the old one out. Unboxed the new one and somehow slid the old one back in. Worst thing was they threw the "new" cartridge away and by the time the light came on again it was long gone!
Good Luck and Thank You for using Fixya.

Thank you for your input. We bought the new cartridge at Staples. I was wondering if maybe the new cartridge was not exactly compatible with the Sharp copier. I should have just kept the original empty Sharp cartridge and had it refilled instead of recycling it. I suppose by using an 'offbrand' cartridge, I've now negated any warranty. Not sure what to do - but THANKS for the answer posted. (I was hoping for a simple answer like a reset button!! :o) )

If the box was a "staples" branded box then it is a refill. I would take it back and exchange it, either with another staples unit or a Sharp OEM one if they carry them. The warranty on the copier long since expired so no worries there. Be sure to update my helpfulness rating if I have helped you. Also we are having a contest this month based on testimonials so if you would care to leave one that would be great.
    Thanks,

I've lost my manual. Does the red light that

The red light that looks like an empty cylinder on the Sharp AL 1631 Grayscale Copier panel is the "drum replacement required" indicator. The "cartridge replacement" indicator is represented by 6 dots forming a triangular shape.
The drum replacement indicator lights up when there are about 1000 copies left until its end of life. It is only when the indicator starts blinking that the drum really needs replacement.
The part number for the drum is AL-100DR.
I hope this helps.
