1. If the engine won't develop high rpm's, possiblely chain brake is applied. 2. If not that, likely clutch or sprocket.

Chain loose on your chainsaw?

Hi there,

Chainsaw bars get loose all the time. This can create a dangerous situation.

Tightening the chain is done through the positioning of the bar. The further away from the drive gear it extends, the tighter the chain is.

The are usually two nuts holding the bar on. These need to be loosened slightly to allow the bar movement.

Depending on your model there may be a guard over them. Remove it.

Once the nuts are loose, locate the tensioning screw. It will be relatively small, located adjacent to and facing parallel to the bar.

This screw is attached to a metal lip that in turn is attached to the bar. The screw remains in one place while the lip moves up down.

Start spinning. Keep going until the chain is tight.

Tighten the Bar Nuts, replace the guard if necessary.

Now go slice some wood.

Best regards

Rancher 460 Chain loose

If you have run out of adjustment there are a number of reasons, wrong drive link count of the chain ( too long ). The chain has stretched due to the machine not oiling correctly, or the tentioner has stripped the thread and is not moving forwaed.

My timing chain tensioner was loose, however i kept driving my car cause i had important errands to run. When I parked it to go in the store and came back out and started it up again it wouldn't. Lights...

If the tensioner was loose and the chain had jumped a slot, you would have a hard time even starting the car if it even start at all. It would crank and everything but just would not start. The starter has no correlation with the tensioner. A bad starter will either do nothing, or it would clunk and not turn over.

Loose chain. The chain has the specified 78 drive links, but it's too loose even at the tightest adjustment (has quick-adjust bar with nose sprocket). The chain has plenty of wear left on its teeth. The...

If it is the correct drive link count, then unfortunatley it has stretched, it is not a good idea to remove links as the next thing to happen is it breakes.

The engine starts but the chain does not move even when the throttle is applied and then it starts to smoke the whine does not sound like it has full power either

Can you move the chain by hand? If not, the chain brake may be set or damaged so that the chain cannot move. Is the chain adjusted extremely tight? Is bar oil getting to the chain? The smoke is probably coming from the clutch which is trying to drive the chain. The chain should be adjusted so that the chain just comes up to the lower bar edge, but allows free turning of the chain by hand. Get back to us if you need further help.

Chain saw chain stopped moving

Was it running and shut down and was froze or when you went to restart it was frozen? Two things I have seen cause this other than a seized engine. One - chain bound up. Remove side cover and inspect chain mechanism. Two- the pull cord is bound up. Remove the pull cord cover and inspect.

It is possible that the clutch has froze, could try taking the side pannel of and seeing if it spins freely with out the chain bar on. If it does, it could be a problem with the chain, make sure its not tightened up too tight and that the chain can move freely over the bar.
