It seems to me that you are in one of the modes where the camera is controlling the settings.
What do you mean when you say "Back the lens off?"

Please turn the camera off and then on again.
Use one of the creative modes and see what you get. I suggest Aperture Priority.

Auto Focus works on contrast, so please ensure that there is sufficient light and contrast when you are testing.

Also, if you have another lens please try with that to isolate the issue.

If this doesn't work for you, please comment and let me know, and I will be more than happy to assist you to further resolve your issue.

Thank you.

    Thanks for your feedback.

I suggest that you upgrade the firmware version on the camera please.

Once done, you may please customise the lens.

Does this issue occur in the daytime too?

Did you use the creative modes? What happened?

The 18/55 mm auto focus lens stopped working

First, make sure that both the camera and lens are set to auto-focus. The problem is possibly as simple as dirty contacts between the lens and the camera's lens mount. Depress and hold the lens release button while you fully rotate the lens back and forth about ten times. The friction between the contacts on the lens and the contacts on the lens mount will clean the contacts.

Auto focus problem

Could be dirty contacts. Remove the lens and clean the contacts on the body and the lens where they meet with a cotton swab lightly dampened with rubbing alcohol.

This to me is a connection problem and may only require moving the AF-MF button back and forth a few times or removing the lens and cleaning the contacts between the lens and camera body.
Generally the "L" series lenses are pretty resilient in construction of offer the user few problems.
The lens contacts can be cleaned with a soft red rubber pencil eraser where you lightly polish the contact area of the gold contacts. Clean away any rubber dust with a lens cloth not a tissue, be extra careful not to get dust into the camera body cavity. reassemble the lens and try the camera lens operation
This should clean up the problem

My Canon Rebel will not autofocus. It takes pictures just fine with manual focus. I see several posts about this and no solutions other than the user doesn't know how to take a picture. We've had the...

A few suggest about this problem. First in manual or auto focus mode does the green in focus confirmation light come on in the lower right corner of the viewfinder? Are you shooting in One Shot-AF, have you selected an Auto Focus Point are your pictures in focus? I know you've been using this camera for 2 years and these questions you need to ask yourself. If that green confirmation light comes on then the picture will be in focus. a few things that will mess up focus are little or no contrast. No contrast like huge expanses of water, sky, glass or infinity will render a auto focus system near useless. Something that is good is that you haven't said anything about error codes which is good. These questions my sound lame but ask yourself this when was the last time I cleaned the lens (Front Element) use a lens cloth for this and huff on it if a little moisture is needed. Do you change lenses often and when was the last time you checked your sensor for dirt? If you have had the lens off you should check the rear lens element for finger prints or oil. A dirty rear lens element will cause everything to look as if it's shot in a dream world. Check your camera sensor buy taking a (manual) focus shot of a piece of clear blue sky download it to the computer increase the size to 100% and check out the blue for dirt. A camera that's two years old and used "normally" may need the sensor cleaned. But go back to this infocus light if it's coming on and the pictures are out of focus then you have another problem as in dirt.
Hope this was a little insight into your problem

18-55 Nikon lense does not auto focus. How do I see if this is a motor problem or a lense problem

This lens has an electrical motor inside to do the focusing. So a motor problem is a lens problem. when you mount the lens on the camera a number or electrical contacts are connected to the power supply in the camera body, this gives the electric motor it's power to operate. make sure all the little contacts are clean and that they push in and bouce back out on the lens mount area. You;ll see them there are usually 7-10 of these little silver colored contacts, they are spring loaded so the float in and out to make good contact with the camera body. If they are ok, then you needto make sure your camera or lens is not set to manual focus. I know this is elementary, but, hey, I've done it myself. both the camera and the lens need to be set to "auto " focus. the lens has a button on the side, should be set "M/A". the camera (depending on which nikon you have, will have a button on the front of the camera marked "C. S, M" or similar, some only have two settings. it needs to NOT be on "M" for manual focus. that should do it unless you have a repair problem with the camera of lens, it could be either.

The shutter button does not work, the camera is on but it wont take the picture

this could be caused either by no memory card or a lens error , remove the power , press the lens release button , unscrew the lens , clean the lens contacts with a little bit of alcohol on a lens cloth , do not touch the contacts inside the camera , remount after it is dry and insert power and try agian . if this doesnt't work go see a repair guy

Camera won't take a picture when autofocus is on

It sounds like you have a problem with the auto focus on the lens. The 18-135 has a focusing motor inside the lens itself. If this motor is not working, then it won't focus. It could also be the contacts (small and silver on the lens look like ball bearings buried halfway into the top part of the lens where it connects inside the camera body) or the contacts inside the camera body. These can be CAREFULLY cleaned with alcohol and a QTip or a clean pencil eraser. Just make sure you don't get anything into the lens or camera.

If the camera is over a year old, it may just be time to take it to the camera shop for a cleaning.

Autofcous and manual focus do not work

excuse me if this is a dumb question but you wouldn't believe the things people do...., but in manual mode are you actually manually trying to move the lens? as manual mode means just that you take hold of the lens and turn it. If it wont turn it sounds like the lens is jammed and needs returning/repairing.

if taking hold of the lens and turning it works for manual mode, take the lens off and clean the gold contacts on both the camera and the lens with a pencil erasor this may bring the auto focus back to life, switch back to auto and try again, if not its most likely the lens but take the body to a canon store and try another lens just to double check the body is ok

drop me a line if i can be of further assistance

best of luck
