Question about Lutron 1000-Watt Incandescent Dimmer Switch by Electronics, Inc

1 Answer

2 Lutron dimmers not working after floor cleaner used large machine. 15amp breaker is tripped and will not reset. Checked all outlets, only one not working. Replaced it and breaker is still tripped and dimmers inop still. No GFCI in the system. Oh and I replaced the breaker too. Can a blown Lutron dimmer trip the breaker or do I have a major short somewhere. Thanks!

The dimmer should have nothing to do with the tripped breaker... Just disconnect the dimmer as a test. The dimmers are normally in series with the hot side of the line and if they short the controlled lights will remain on, if they open, then the lights will not come on at all. If the machine had somehow been plugged into the lights, then that probably blew the dimmer.

The floor cleaner MAY have overloaded the wiring and the breaker MAY not have protected the wiring and there is melted insulation and a short someplace.

If you can't find the smoking gun, get an electrician to evaluate the problem for your own safety.

Is this a Lutron Maestro? Check your breakers to see if any are tripped, otherwise the dimmer needs to be replaced. The internal transformer has blown most likely

A fuse is designed to fail if a short or high amp draw condition occurs, a fuse can not cause a secondary safety(breaker) to trip.
The unit has developed a short and must be replaced.

No power to Whirlpool awo/d5727. I have checked the fuse and the socket but still have no power.

You say you checked "socket" and the "fuse," did you mean the AC wall outlet (115V) and a fuse or breaker in the main power panel?
Nearly all circuits involving water are protected by a Ground Fault Interrupter that can be servicing several wall outlets (perhaps one not near the washing machine) or can be located as part of a circuit breaker in your main power panel.
The GFI outlets will have one or two push buttons located between the outlets and a combination GFI/overcurrent breaker will also have at least one button where others will have none.
If you find one that is tripped, try resetting it. If it will not reset, unplug the washing machine and try again.
If it now stays on, your machine may have an electrical path causing it to trip and using an unprotected outlet may be unsafe and an indication that the appliance itself may have electrical leakage which could be otherwise dangerous.
The circuit breakers in the main power panel can also fail (they didn't 20 years ago) and we have replaced 3 in a home only 5 years old already so they are not made well anymore.

15amp 1000watt dimmer gets extremely hot with 960 watt load

Electricians use the 80% rule.
When watt rating is 1000, we say 800 watts maximum. Same for wire ratings, and circuit breaker ratings, switch ratings, etc. 80% rule is the rule for electricians.
The closer you run a device at full load, the warmer it gets and the more quickly the device fails.
The signal that a dimmer is failing is heat.
I suggest replacing 1000watt dimmer with 1500watt dimmer, or reducing load.
All dimmers get warm, but should not be hot. 1500watt dimmers usually have aluminum fins on the face to dissipate heat. So 1500watt dimmers look different than 1000watt dimmers.
If you reduce load, and 1000watt dimmer still gets hot with reduced load, then dimmer has gone bad.

Hi Jay,
Ive suspect that there's a problem in the main line of the wiring. Since four halogen bulb are already replaced with a new bulb and bypassed the dimmer switch concentrate now on the wiring and the main panel board. Look for a tripped/busted breaker on the box, reset it.Replaced if busted. If nothing works, you need to check the wiring on the ceiling for open.
Hope it may help you.
Have a nice day!

The LED indicators on my Lutron Maestro continuously run up and down without stopping and the lights (or fan) will not work? It seems as if the entire switch is frozen... Whats the problem?

1) If this installation was working before, the Maestro has a small pull-out circuit breaker that lets you reset the device. This is called the FASS Front Accessible Service Switch, located at bottom of dimmer where it meets cover plate.

2) If this is new installation, then double-check your wiring and check that load matches dimmer capacity: 600 watt incandescent or halogen, which apparently excludes CFLs.
Some electronic devices have shortened lifespan on circuits that are not clean. Use circuit analyzer on nearby outlet that is on same breaker to see if line has interference.

I have a Meastro dimmer MAW-600 W that is installed, but the light does not turn on and the LED keeps blinking. Any idea what the problem can be?

3) I don't see MAW-600 W listed among Maestro dimmers, so I don't have that specific manual.

Suspect that a 15amp heater tripped the 15amp breaker. this happened a couple of times. now when the 15amp breaker trips a 20amp breaker also trips. the heater is now unplugged and the 20amp can be reset...

You Know for a 15AMP unit it really should be on it's OWN sub-main, Ordinary House sockets are usually only 10AMP rated. This WILL overload any normal household wiring. You also need to get this unit checked out. to see if you have any "Earth leakage". Also at 115volts and 15Amps that equal a 7.66 OHM load....Be careful.

Lutron Maestro dimmer rocker stopped working

Because the switches are relatively inexpensive, there aren't kits to repair them when they fail mechanically. Your best bet is to get an exact replacement from a Home Depot or such, turn off the breaker switch, and rewire it exactly as it was, using wire nuts and tape.
