Paper type must be set to "Plain" to select Normal or Fast for Print Quality. Every other paper type selected will automatically set print quality to Fine (Photo).

The black ink just stopped printing. I replaced it with a new one but the same result occured. I tried the self cleaning feature but again no printing. All of the other colors are fine ?????

This is a known problem with these machines,
if it's still under warranty contact brother and they'll send you to a local repair company that will replace the print head and also give you all new OEM inks.
If it's out of warranty than the cost of replacing the unit would be less than the cost of fixing it.

There's one thing you can try but there's no guarantee it'll work: (copied from another of my solutions)

---

You'll have to run the cleaning mode a few times,
to do so you'll have to get into Maintenance Mode.

To do this:
Press MENU then * then 2 then 8 then 6 then 4
This takes some practice and you have to press them all within a few seconds.
If the machine doesn't say MAINTENANCE when you do it press STOP/EXIT and try again.

When in Maintenance Mode:
Press 7 then 6, then press 3, then press BLACK START
It will say Cleaning - this will take some time when it's done it will go back to MAINTENANCE

After it's completed try 0 then 9, this will print out a small Print Quality test page
it should have several rows of each color (Cyan, Magenta, Yellow and Black)
if they still don't look right then run the cleaning mode again and then print another quality page.

Continue to do this until the quality is back to normal,
when you're done to exit maintenance mode press 9 then 9 to return to normal operation.

note: this cleaning mode uses up a fair amount of ink, use sparingly

note: maintenance mode is for brother technicians and has some codes that can damage your machine, only use the codes I've explained in this solution

My brother MFC 665CW printer shows a 4F error and unable to clean. How do I get to the head to clean it?

Do the following to clean the print head:

1. Press INK key on the control panel.

2. Press the DOWN arrow key until CLEANING appears on the LCD.

3. Press OK.

4. Press the DOWN arrow key to select BLACK, COLOR or ALL depending on what you want to clean.

5. Press OK.

The machine will clean the print head. When cleaning is finished, the machine will go back to Ready automatically. If you are experiencing a print quality issue, we recommend you repeat the print head cleaning for each color showing an issue at least five (4) times.

If you are experiencing a print quality issue and want to see if the cleanings are improving the print quality, print a Print Quality Check Sheet (PQCS) after the first cleaning and then print another PQCS after repeating the print head cleaning steps at least three (3) more times (4 total cleanings). You can then compare the two Print Quality Check Sheets.

Do the following to print a Print Quality Check Sheet:

1. Press INK key on the control panel. TEST PRINT will appear on the LCD.

2. Press OK. PRINT QUALITY will appear on the LCD.

3. Press OK.

4. Press COLOR START.

NOTE: The machine will generate the Print Quality Check Sheet (PQCS). On the PQCS each of the four colors is represented by a slanted square pattern made up of 96 individual blocks. The colors should appear (from left to right): Black - Yellow - Cyan - Magenta. Cyan is the light blue color and Magenta is the pinkish color.

The yellow ink will not print. There is definitely ink in the cartridge. I have tried the cleaning process 4 times.

  1. Print a Print Quality Check Sheet.

    1. Press the Ink or Ink Management button.

    2. Press the up or down arrow key to choose Test Print. Press OK.

    3. Press the up or down arrow key to choose Print Quality. Press OK.

    4. Press Color(Colour) Start.

  2. Closely examine the Print Quality Check Sheet. Each of the four colors is represented by a slanted square pattern made up of individual blocks. The colors should appear in the following order from left to right: Black - Yellow - Cyan - Magenta.

  1. The LCD asks you if the print quality is OK for black and the three colors. Choose No.

  2. The LCD asks you if you want to start cleaning. Choose Yes. The machine starts cleaning the print head.

  3. When the machine completes cleaning the print head, press Color(Colour) Start. Another Print Quality Check Sheet will print.

  4. Repeat the cleaning and the quality check process following the Step 7-9.

  5. Compare the second or third Print Quality Check Sheet with the first one you printed in Step 1:
    1. Press Stop/Exit.

Note We do not recommend frequent unplugging and re-plugging of the machine and/or leaving the machine unplugged for extended periods of time.

  • To maintain premium print quality, our product is designed to automatically clean the print head periodically. When the machine is unplugged, it will not complete the periodic cleanings needed to ensure ink does not dry in the print head and may cause poor print quality.

  • Machines with a Message Center or Fax Preview have a 24 hour memory backup. All other machines have a 1 hour memory backup. If a machine is unplugged beyond the memory capability, the clock data is lost and causes the machine to reset. When the machine is plugged back into the outlet, the internal clock resets and the machine will automatically start a cleaning process causing the consumption of ink.
We recommend using the On/Off or Power Save button to power down the machine. Using the On/Off or Power Save button allows minimal power to the machine ensuring periodic cleanings of the print head occur only when necessary and needed information remains in memory.

Caution
  • Cleaning the print head consumes ink. Cleaning too often uses ink unnecessarily.

  • DO NOT touch the print head. Touching the print head may cause permanent damage and may void the print head's warranty.

  • Brother strongly recommends that you do not refill the ink cartridges provided with your machine. We also strongly recommend that you continue to use only Genuine Brother Brand replacement ink cartridges. Use or attempted use of potentially incompatible ink and/or cartridges in the Brother machine may cause damage to the machine and/or may result in unsatisfactory print quality. Our warranty coverage does not apply to any problem that is caused by the use of unauthorized third party ink and/or cartridges. To protect your investment and obtain premium performance from the Brother machine, we strongly recommend the use of Genuine Brother Supplies.

Streaks on copy

Try these steps first:

1. Check ink level.

2. Nozzle Check Pattern
  1. Load A4- or letter-size plain paper in the Auto Sheet Feeder (ASF) or cassette.

  2. Press the <Feed Switch> button to select the appropriate paper source.

  3. Press <Menu> repeatedly until [MAINTENANCE] appears.

  4. Press <OK>.
The machine prints a nozzle check pattern.

    bde48f2.jpg

  5. Confirm the pattern is not broken, missing, or a specific color is not printed.

3. Print Head Cleaning / Head Refreshing If the printed Nozzle Check Pattern is broken, missing, or a specific color is not printed, clean the print head.
  1. Press the <Menu> button on the printers operation panel repeatedly until [MAINTENANCE] appears in the LCD.

  2. Press the left [<] or right [>] arrow buttons to select the cleaning setting you want. Select [HEAD CLEANING] or [HEAD REFRESHING] for deep print head cleaning.

Note: [HEAD REFRESHING] uses more ink than [HEAD CLEANING], so perform [HEAD REFRESHING] only when necessary.

  3. Press the <OK> button.

  4. Print a Nozzle Check Pattern and perform at least two Head Refreshings if the pattern is not correct.

You can also try using a higher quality print settings as follows:

Change the Print Quality Settings (Windows) The Quality setting controls how finely ink droplets are placed on the printed page. Depending on the type of paper being used a higher Print Quality setting does not always insure a better print. Print speed will decrease as the Print Quality setting is increased. Follow the instructions below to change the print quality settings in the Canon printer driver for the Windows operating system through a printing application.
  1. Click 'Properties' in the Print dialog box.

Note: Depending on the Application software, 'Properties' may be displayed as 'Preferences'.

  2. Set the desired print quality in the 'Print Quality' section.

  3. Select 'High', 'Standard', or 'Draft / Fast'.
To set more detailed print quality settings, follow this procedure:
  1. Select 'Custom' and click 'Set'.

    cc8d5b7.jpg

  2. In the Set Print Quality dialog drag the slide bar from 'Fast' to 'Fine' to select the print quality.

    1bbaaa1.jpg

Note: There are five options in 'Quality'. However, selectable options are limited depending on the media type.

  3. Select 'Auto', 'Dither', or 'Diffusion' from the 'Halftoning' section.

If the above steps do not solve your problem, it may be a time to purchase a new printhead.

Brother MFC290C all-in-one printer wont' print from new black cartridge and machine doesn't tell me that cartridge not working (like it did with the yellow cartridge).

Hi
Thanks for using FixYa. Go to control panel-> Printers-> Try and print a test page from there and check if black prints on the test page. Also try and reset your printer by pressing the DOWN or UP keys a couple of times till you see ‘Maintenance 99’ displayed on the display. Then hold down the ‘Set’ button to go to standby mode. Please note that if you press the exit key only after typing in a single digit then the machine goes to maintenance mode in initial stages.
On the front of the cartridge there is a mirror which it uses to decide if the ink is low. Cover this area of the cartridge with black electrical tape.

Please do accept the solution if the issue is resolved or else revert for further assistance.

Thanks Rylee

Printing quality

Printing quality on this printers is great, yet there are some trouble with older printheads.

You should follow this in order to fix the problem:
- Remove both ink cartridges
- Remove printhead (press release button on the inner left corner of the printhead, above where the black ink cartridge goes)
- Close the cover and wait until it tells you that the printhead is missing. When it does, open the cover again and place the printhead inside (put it in and press towards the back of the printer, make sure it makes a loud snap).
- place both ink cartridges in
If the printer says "press start to copy", press the menu button and select calibrate printer, and then select "print calibration sheet".
If it just tells you that there is a new printhead detected and calibration is requiered, follow the instructions it will give you.

Once you calibrate the printer,
- Press menu, scroll down to "clean printhead" and select "deep clean"

Once that is completed, go ahead and print.

If it is still not working, you got a defective printhead and you need to replace it.
You will need to go to kodak.com/go/itg for additionl troubleshooting and the replacing of your printhead, or you should just call 1 800 421 6699 and have then replace the printhead for you. This is free of charge.
