I have the same problem with the ice door flap staying open. Could you provide more details on how the get to the flap and repair. How to remove the front cover without damage? Is a new spring normally required? Thanks

My KitchenAid refrigerator ice dispencer is broken at the outlet. The screw turns and ice comes out, but the clear plastic "cup" attached to the dispensing lever has come loose and the little trap door stays open (see attached image), causing the ice to continually melt. I can't see up in there very well. Is it fixable by a semi-handy person like me, or should I call a pro? Please fixable, please advise. If not, please recommend. Thanks, Robert

Same here.  Everything works except the flap that opens for the ice to dispense.  Warm air is getting in through the flap and melting ice causing a drip and jamming the chute.

Whirlpool side by side ice dispenser flap is loose and does not stay shut. Ice is melting and refreezing in freezer. A little black round piece with a "tail" on it came off. I'm just wondering how to get to all of this without tearing anything up so I can fix it.

Same problem here. Loose flap causes ice buildup in the ice chute of the freezer.

A piece of plastic that holds the spring, door and pin was laying under the edge of my Kenmore. Started investigating the loose door causing the ice buildup and the pin and spring fell out. The plastic tab broke away from the housing (Part #1 of the typical parts diagram). Trying to locate a new housing and how to replace the part(s). Filled a Walmart bag with paper towels and shoved it in the ice shoot to stop the warm air infiltration forming frost in the freezer. Will let you know how it goes ! - Randy

I had same problem. with GE Adora. Fixed it by spraying up the chute with wd40. This loosens up the rust buildup.

SOURCE: ice dispenser door flap will not close.

Remove the top freezer hinge hover on top of the freezer door . Unplug the receptical there ( this will remove power to the door only ) .
Using a small screwdriver at the "crease" on the bottom of the dispensor control board inside the dispensor , twist slightly to disengage the 2 clips ( 1 on each side ) holding the dispensor board . Unplug the 3 connectors from the board . 4 screws ( 1 on each corner ) hold the dispensor housing shield . Remove these 4 small screws . After removing , at the top right , you will see a solenoid and plunger . These are probably rusted , holding the flap open . The part number for the solenoid and plunger is WR62X10055 . 3 screws hold this part on . When reinstalling the dispensor housing , It slides back on 2 "grooves" so make sure it is back in place , or the board will not snap back on properly at the bottom .

Kristen,
Thank you for giving more information. I believe you will need to replace the flapper on the ice dispenser. I based this answer on the following: you mentioned when the door is held open ice comes out. Let me know if this helps. As you may know, there are several different things that could cause this issue, but this is the most common one of them. Here is a how to video on this type of repair:

Ice door flap will not close

I had a similar problem once. i opened the door and used a hair dryer blowing into the dispensing area of the door. There was a ice build up that was not visible with a quick look. It takes a while so be patient when thawing and be sure not to use too high of setting so you dont deform any of the plastic parts.

Freezer door ice dispenser flap will not close completely. The cold air is leaking out of the freezer. What can I do to fix?

There are multiple parts to the dispenser for GE. You say that door isn't closing properly, which could mean that the solenoid isn't working properly, or that the door flap retainer itself is broken, I want to say that they make a complete kit for it but not for certain,

Ice will not dispence thru door.

Without knowing the brand and model # I can offer the most common solution.

On most "pass the ice through the door" models there is a flapper door where the ice dispenses. The spring which holds this door closed when you are not dispensing ice becomes weak allowing the flap to stay open jsut a bit. This open space will create an ice dam in teh dispenser thus not allowing the ice to dispense. The repair is generally made by replacing the flap assembly.

All the best.

You will have to call Maytag at 1-800-688-9900...Motherboard is bad. You can pull out the little plate at the bottom of the water/ice dispenser, then unscrew the two screw. Pull on the bottom and the panel should come out. Unplug the white connector on the left. This will stop the flapping of the ice dispenser flap.

Ice dispensor flap does not stay shut

This is how most dispensers are accessed.

Check for screws around or on the under side of the dispenser trim that can be removed to get the trim off. Sometimes the drip tray in the base of the dispenser needs to be removed to access the screws. Sometimes the top panel (touchpad) of the dispenser is removed to access the dispenser components.

If there are no screws, use a putty knife with the end wrapped with tape so the paint on the door panel is not scratched.

Start at the bottom of the trim and CAREFULLY pry the trim away from the door panel.

There may be small slots in the panel on the under side that the putty knife can be inserted into.

With the trim off, the dispenser components can be serviced.

Ice dispenser flap/door will not close properly

I have a similar problem. The repair guy took a look at it and stated everything is working and did not order any solenoid or any other parts. After he left the problem returned where ice comes down the chute it tends to lodge and keep the door open. I am disagreement with the repair guy and am leaning toward the idea that the spring has lost tension and is just too weak to close with any authority. There is a video on how to replace the spring on youtube. This is what I will be doing next weekend and will try to return to post results.
