This error message is normally indicative of a hard disk failure. The hard disk of course contains the files necessary to start your OS into opening. This could either be a hardware or software issue then in the harddisk. Often, this would be the hard disk itself not being recognized by the motherboard. At times, this could also part(s) of the OS were corrupted. The former would require replacement and the latter would require recovery/re-install of the OS.

Hope this be of initial help/idea. Pls post back how things turned up or should you need additional information.

Good luck and kind regards.

Thank you for using FixYa.

HP Pavilion a6010n takes forever to boot to OEM Windows Vista disk

Yes it does - do not disrupt the operation in order to prevent future system operating errors. This is normal. If it fails, you will get a notification error and until then, please be patient. I'm assuming you are installing Windows Vista to upgrade from a previous operating system?

I start up my computer, I get a black screen that says press F1, after I do that I get a black screen with a message that reads, operating system not functioning

Have you take note the error message about the operating system? does it say a corrupted windows file?

With regard to the error message about F1 to continue, i would say that your hard drive is looking for the operating system. There is a possibility that your operating system is corrupted due a virus infected file or a system file was accidentally deleted from your computer or it could be an issue with your hard drive itself.

You may need to check also if your hard drive is detected by computer. You may call your computer manufacturer if your system still under warranty. In case the hard drive need to be replaced.

I suggesst to run a system diagnostics first to check if the hard drive still functioning before you run windows repair using the operating disc you have with your system.

Keep me posted.
