Question about Tascam Electronics - Others

Open Question

Hi, I have a Tascam 788 has new eprom ( ver 2.02 ) installed, and hard drive reformatted in Ms Dos via my Mac Mirror Door. The 788 when turned on - lights up, the Tascam logo appears, the hard drive spins and remains that way. I have tried the 788 self diagnostics function and everything is fine. I assume that this would indicate that the eprom is working and the hard drive appears to be working ( Tested in the Mac OK ) any ideas etc. greatly appreciated Brian J Palmer

SOURCE: TASCAM FW-1804 FIREWIRE PROBLEM

I have a Tascam 1804, and i've had the same problem. Mostly with Latency issues. For me, replacing the firewire chord with a gold plated one worked. PLUS, remember that the firewire connection is technically considered a NETWORK connection which is modified by whatever controls your network activity (ie. Firewall, Anti-Virus). Whenever i start to use my Tascam, i make sure I disable my WiFi and other Internet/network related items so they dont cross interfere with activity in my firewire port. hope this helps.

SOURCE: drive not detected in Mac

you might have to reformat it, try going on to the application "disk utility" on your mac and check to see if your hard drive shows up there. if so all you have to do is mount it and then it should show up on your desktop.

SOURCE: Compaq S4 100 scanner won't work with new computer on MS Vista

I went to compaq's support site and got the XP drivers here: http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/softwareList?os=228&lc=en&dlc=en&cc=us&lang=en&product=217323

I installed the drivers first S4-100 Color USB Scanner Drivers for Windows XP

Then installed the application: Vistascan Support Software Module for the Compaq S4-100 Scanner

*be sure all your "Windows Updates" are up to date.

Once installed I had to go to the default directory C:\VistaScan to find the .exe file. The software booted right up! But, it said the device was not on. I simply pulled the USB out and put it back in and it worked perfectly.

I imagine you might have to start up vista scan and pull the USB cord in and out every time you reboot your machine, which is kinda a cheap work around. However, it is a way to "give it to the man"!! and I like that idea ;)

SOURCE: Want to copy files from Tascam 788 to IMAC's Garage Band

The problem is thus. You have a multitrack recording saved in a format that your portastudio recognizes and you want to use it on your imac. If you can copy the file to the imac as a file, a translator, if one is available, will make it usable by the mac. You won't be able to play it and record on the imac because maintaining the recording as multitrack would require one output from the portastudio and one input on the imac for each recorded track.
Bummer dude. The kluge method would be to play/record 2 tracks at a time (or however many outputs and inputs are available) and hope for some semblance of time alignment, after which you can fine tune it and then start your editing.

SOURCE: "invalid MS -DOS function"

What OS are you using? are you using XCOPY or XCOPY32 to copy the contents of the disk over? Try to use an ISO Image Creator like MagicISO(Shareware), or the Nero Application Suite(Not Free) or WinImage(Freeware).

Cant delete or add new files to my NexStar.3, I have it connected to a MacBook Pro

If you can SEE the drive on your desktop but cannot modify it's contents there is a good chance it is formatted as NTFS which is a Microsoft Windows format. Mac's can only read/copy information from these drives and not write/delete/modify them. You have 2 choices, you can erase the drive and reformat it as Mac OS Extended (Journaled) (Mac/Linux only) or you can format it as MS-DOS (FAT32) which is truly cross platform but slower to read and write to from a Mac. To reformat the drive you use Apple's "Disk Utility" program in your utility folder.

How do I reformat my smartdisk firelite external hard drive for my new mac?

Go to the applications folder and then utilities open Disk Utility in the left box select you firelite and then clcik on the erase tab to your right. You can then select how you are going to format the hard drive standard for using with Mac only machines is Mac OS Extended (Journaled) or if you want to use with both PC and Macs is MS-DOS (FAT). Then name your drive and click on erase. Hope this helps.

Mac OS X will not file-share any non-HFS volume over a network. However, you can set up such sharing manually if you are willing to use the command-line interface by following the detailed instructions at

I cannot copy files FROM my Western Digital 500GB

Hi,

Check the file system of your hard drive. If your PC is recognizing it, check if its a FAT or NTFS. If it is NTFS then you have to reformat it using your Mac and choose FAT. Mac OS recognizes NTFS as a read only drive. If you plan using it with your PC and MAC you should format it using your mac and choose MS-DOS in disc Utility. You cannot format the drive using your PC Computer with a FAT file system because of the capacity. Only Mac can format it with a FAT file system.

Got a new imac moved ms office file to my book -

Hi,

Try to change the File system of the hard drive to FAT. It is currently in NTFS. Mac recognizes NTFS file system as read only. You must use the disc utility and format it with a volume format of MS DOS.

By changing it to MS DOS (FAT) you can use it with Mac and PC. Readable and writable.

Mac formatted 320 Premium now shows as MS-DOS and all files gone!

Hi, this could be a failure in either the circuit board for the enclosure, the drive or even a failure of the Mac file table of the drive.

If one of the circuit boards has failed it will not show you the drive as accessible, if it's just the partition info on the drive that's damaged it will usually show as 0KB/GB size. If the drive circuitry is simply failed then you can try moving the hard drive out of the western digital enclosure and into a new one. If this works it's just a bad circuit board in the enclosure and the new one should work fine. If the new enclosure fails to work or if you have a damaged logical drive you will likely need the help of a pro to get your data back.

I am a pro myself and have contacts all over the world with similar facilities and will be happy to refer you to own in your region if you can provide me your country/state/city.

Maxtor Basics portable 320gb Mac to pc compatability problems

Hi Tys,

I had a similar issue with my Maxtor Basics portable 500GB drive. I hadn't formatted mine yet, but had heard there were issues, so decided to find out before I start. I even saw your post here looking for an answer. Finally, one of my friends told me the following solution, which worked fine for me:

Don't format the drive as any of the Mac OS Extended options, simply reformat it as MS-DOS (it should be one of the options in Disk Utilities when you choose Erase and go to the Volume Format dropdown list).

Your Mac should be able to recognise and use the drive in this format and it works for PCs. Transferring files between the two shouldn't be a problem.

A thing to note, though, is that these Maxtor drives apparently come ready-formatted as MS-DOS (mine did). But while my Mac recognised the drive, I couldn't copy files on to it. If this happens, erase this MS-DOS formatting with... MS-DOS. Don't ask me why this works, I'm not a Mac Genius, but now my Maxtor is trouble-free and can transfer files from PC to Mac and back again.

Hope this works out for ya!

K

Tascam 788

Hi,

Sorry to hear about your problem. A number of things could cause this error to appear including bad sectors on the hard drive (which will require a reformat).

Two things you can check though before getting into replacing or reformatting the drive (which will erase all of your data) are 1) Make sure the power adapter hasn't failed. A bad or incompatible adapter won't provide enough power to the drive when it tries to spin up and could cause this error. You can try a replacement after-market adapter but you'll have to match the specs in the manual. 2) You can open up the 788 and inspect the two wires connecting the disk drive to the motherboard. One is power and the other will be an IDE ribbon cable. If either is loose that could be the cause of your problem.

If you do determine that the drive is bad you'll need to remove the drive, hook it up to a PC and reformat it there. Then reinstall it in the 788 which will upon bootup automatically reformat it again with Tascam's proprietary disk format. You can optionally replace the drive. I believe Tascam's site has a list of drives which are compatible with the 788. Reformatting (or replacing) the drive will obviously cause all of your data to be lost, but should get your 788 working again (if a bad format was the problem).

One thing of note if the drive format being bad turns out to be the problem is that Firmware versions 1.07 and below have a bug which can cause bad sectors to corrupt the drive after delete operations. If you have a firmware version which is 1.07 or below you should upgrade to a newer revision or you'll risk corrupting the drive again in the future. You can get the upgrade and instructions on how to apply it here: http://www.tascam.com/products/788;9,16,132,19.html

Best of luck and hopefully it's just a loose connection or a bad power adapter.

Tascam 788

The 788 can be used to play music from a SCSI attached CD-RW drive, but the record (and all other mixing functions) are disabled so you are not able to record the CD output onto a track using the SCSI attached drive.

Your options are:

1.) Rip tracks files from the CD onto you PC as wav files. You'll have rip (or later convert) those files to mono 16 or 24 bit wav files at 44.1kHz, use the old dos 8.3 naming convention for the filenames, and them burn them onto a CD-R or CD-RW as data files which can then be taken and imported into the 788.

2.) Play the CD through with an external CD player or stereo and route the output into an input on the 788. Assign the input to a track and record. Be careful to use a line level output, like an aux out (or try the CD player's outputs directly into the 788) if you are using a stereo. Avoid using a speaker output as the signal from a speaker output will be too strong and can damage the 788.

Hope this helps.

Cheers.

Reformatting.

hi there,
you can Format your drive on a Windows machine as "FAT32" and it will be usable both under Mac OS X and Windows. the only thing to make note of is there are some limitations on the FAT32 format, like the 4GB filesize limit and certain naming restrictions.

You can reformat your drive by opening Disk Utility and then reformatting it using that application. in Mac OS X

- In Disk Utility, select the disk.
- Click Erase.
- Choose format from the Volume Format pop-up menu
(select the windows based format).
- Type a name for the disk or volume.
- Click Erase.
- You can use the drive on both the mac and a PC by choosing MS-DOS from the Disk Utility application when you're about to reformat.
