WHY COLOR IS HAZY?

Model indicated is a projection set with three picture tubes.

Cleaning may help your problem--two ways to do this-

with set unplugged remove rear cover and clean the three large black lens you cannot miss--if dusty the picture will be dull and darker--should be done once a year.

Peek up inside to the rear and look at the mirror--unless grimy leave it alone.

Other way is to remove entire screen unit which if you have not done that entails some danger of damage to the screeen.

Try cleaning the lens to see if improvement.

Projection TV sets have two very common problems. One is convergence ( 3D/Warped video) the other is CRT fluid ( Dull Video). Below are more details for both items. Also, complete repair kits with instructions and repair support are avail from site such as www.TvRepairKits.com

Common Problem #1) Convergence has gone out

Projection TV sets need to have all three colors - RED - BLUE - GREEN - lined up correctly on the screen in order for the video to look normal. When its out of alignment the video will look 3D, wavy, distorted, etc. Most of the time you just need to adjust your convergence in the TV menu. If you cannot adjust it in the menu - then your convergence is broken and needs to be repaired.

This is a very common failure on these projection sets and a fairly simple DIY fix. All projection sets including Samsung, RCA, Sony, Philip Magnavox, Panasonic, Pioneer, Akai, GE, JVC, Toshiba, and others at some point will have the same problem.

Common Symptoms include....
  • Screen looks 3D
  • Colors don't line up
  • One or more colors can't be adjusted when using the convergence menu.
  • Screen is bowed or warped.
  • TV shuts off after powering on. The power light will blink. TV may also make a chirping noise.
Here are some pics of convergence problems.

What you will need to do is convergence. You can get a repair kit from TvRepairKits.com . It includes replacement parts, step by step instructions, support, etc.

Common Problem #2) CRT Fluid is Cloudy

Projection TV tubes have a liquid coolant that is used to keep them from overheating. After many years the coolant in the blue and green tubes will become cloudy and cause the screen to look dull, red/orange, etc. You may even see halos around images.

51" Philips Projection Wide Screen. Want to know

Almost all the Philips projection sets have a large black plastic shroud on the top half of the back of the set----it can be removed--most of these sets use torks type screws (star shaped).

With the upper part on the back removed you will find the mirror is suspended---do not try to clean it--it is film like handy wrap and will not need cleaning.

I use a swiffer type duster to reach inside the set to remove any spider webs etc, If dead insects or dirt inside the screen use a very soft cloth with water (just dampen the cloth slightly)

Usually you are seeing spider or cob webs and the duster will get them all--DO NOT APPLY FORCE IF YOU WIPE THE INSIDE OF THE SCREEN AS IT IS EASY TO SCRATCH IT!

If this information helped you, rate this solution as I do this here for free.

If you have questions make a comment here and I will do my best to answer them.

How do you get into the cover to clean the actual tv screen it has dust, cobwebs, and dead spiders down in between it. Help.

THE best way to do this without trouble is to unplug the set and remove the back cover.

You need either a swiffer type duster or I have used a cardboard tube with paper towels taped to it. You can reach inside and get all the webs and debris out--do not apply heavy force if you wipe the inside of the screen.

This is a classic and common problem--the front screen can be removed but it is really more difficult and it is easy to damage it when you can get the same result by going from the back.

When you get the webs out, note the three large black lens--clean them with a lens cloth or a paper towel with glass cleaner sprayed on it.

This should be done once a year--the lens are your light source and if even a bit dusty the picture will be darker and duller than it should be.

Let me know if you have questions BEFORE YOU ATTEMPT THIS.

If this information told you something you did not know, rate this solution as "very helpful" as I do this here for free.

Sony kp-53hs10 picture is cloudy and 3 colors at bottom of screen red blue and green

Look at attached photo--if it is what you have you have a convergence problem.

The KP-53HS10 uses two of the STK-392-020 convergence chips.

Both will need to be replaced and the set adjusted--parts cost on ebay is less than 20 dollars--repair consists of two things--getting at the parts and then replacing them--chips are soldered in so you need to be able to un solder them and solder the new ones in.

LET ME KNOW IF YOU HAVE QUESTIONS-I am here to help.

If this has helped out, rate this solution as I do this here for free.

Chad, sounds like "FROGGY" coolant to me, Philips brand tv`s are infamous for this problem usually the green & blue tubes, you can confirm this by removing the back cover (carefully it`s heavy and has a large mirror attatched to the inside) turning tv on and look directly into the red lens, you will see a clear image, now look into green & blue and there probably very cloudy. Bad news is this is a very long, dirty, job and very diffiicult for a layperson, if you want to attempt it you MUST buy the service manual (any tv shop can order it for you) I would also advise you to NOT buy philips fluid as the **** they sell will become cloudy again (I use RCA cause it works and it`s cheap) good luck if you attempt it, I would advise you to calll a tech, video-tek
