Is this an Alpha Shield firewall? If so you don't need it. There's no real configuration necessary. If you have trouble you can access the config by typing in the address http://192.168.0.1 in your web browser.

to reset the password for your router hold the reset button on the back with a paperclip in for 30 seconds while powered on. This will reset the router back to factory defaults.
the default password is password or 1234 for older devices.

I have had exactly this problem and after MUCH work downloading new drivers for the Vista Pcs and updating the operating system in the DI-524 found that the 524 does not operate well with Vista. A new DI-624 integrated well with Vista, and installed with no problems. Good luck!

Can't get it setup to work without being plugged in to my laptop

If you have Windows XP and there's is no extra security set up on the router then connecting is easy.

In the bottom-right corner you'll see a small icon that looks like a computer. The screen is likely blue on it. Additionally there are two faint crescents near the top of the icon. That's the Wireless Zero-Configuration tool. If you double click on that icon a window will pop up showing the names of nearby connections, their signal strength, and whether or not security is enabled. By default the name of the DI-524 is "default." If it is not secured, click on on and then click the connect button. Windows may then ask if you want to connect to the unsecured network. Click on Connect Anyway and the configuration tool will connect you to the router.

Network key

Lkrawlings:
Can you go into your router from IE? like http://192.168.x.x, then from this configuration page of your router you can find what key you had put into your router. Make sure the type of security you are using like WEP, WPA, PSK, WPA2 etc. This key should match on your desktop or laptop machine to gain connection to your router.

If you are unable to find your key like this then:

You could refresh your router to factory defaults by pressing for 5 seconds, you will find this hole at the back of your router. try going again into your router like I said above and make up any other key.
Hope that helped!
