The viewfinder image focusses onto the ground glass viewfinder screen; your viewfinder image will therefore be out of focus if the screen has moved up or down in relation to where it should be.

Check that the screen is seated properly by removing the lens and looking at the roof of mirror box in the camera body. Usually the screen will have dropped down very slightly and it's held in place by clips to the front and rear. The rear clip is fixed, the front one is a spring clip. Avoid using bare fingers when you manipulate the screen and do not use metal or hard plastic tools on it.

Clean the mirror and the ground glass too. I just did after checking the above and they didn't look dirty, but it made some difference.

When tKing a picture...should my subject appear in the view screen window...the big screen? Or do you have to look in tiny scdeen to see subject when taking a picture?

Use the largest screen to get a better idea of the focus. Smaller screens lack the resolution to show a slightly unfocused shot - but it will be noticeable later when printed or viewed on a large screen. Of course, these screens eat battery life - so you can use your optical viewfinder whenever possible.

I have a canon xsi that I have been using successfully for a year and a half. All of a sudden the focus preview is not working. It doesn't matter what lens I am using. I shoot in manual mode. What I...

When you depress the shutter button halfway, you are (in fact) activating the focus mechanism.
If in AF mode, you should hear the 'beep' when focus is achieved.
However, bear in mind that the XSi has three focussing modes: Quick mode, Live View, and Manual. There is a difference in how focussing is achieved between the Quick and Live View modes. (see page 102 onwards of the user manual "using AF to focus").
Also, the barrel of the lens will move during the focus operation.
If this does not happen, then there is a definate problem.
Having images in focus despite having no movement on the lens, simply means that the aperture settings are probably small enough to give sufficient depth of field to include your subject.

When I take a picture with the Canon Rebel, it doesn't focus in the view finder, but when I look at the picture after it has been taken, it is clear and in focus. Why can't it looked focused when looking...

Good day,

The problem you might be having is that the view finder is out of focus.
If this is the problem it is an easy fix.
You will see a small wheel next to the view finder (it has a + and a - next to it), look through the view finder and let the camera focus on an object. Now turn the wheel and you will see the image either get worse or start to come in focus. Adjust the wheel until you are satisfied with the clarity.

Please let me know if this was helpful!

My canon rebel xsi is not letting me take a picture on auto focus

It is possible you are trying to focus on somethind that is either completly white or completely black. It has trouble focusing in the dark as well. make sure your auto focus point (The red dots in your view finder is in the centre. you can move the red dot with the button on top of your camera that looks like 4 squares. simply look through your viewfinder push the shutter button down half way and the red dot should flash. if it isn't in the centre then move it with the button on top (4 squares) and try again until you get it in the centre.

Brand new Canon EOS Rebel XS. Suddenly, image in the view finder is blurry. Auto focus seems to be working, and pictures are coming out fine. But sometimes, the autofocus focuses on the wrong thing, and so...

Next to the viewfinder ther is a diopter adjustment so you can change the focus in the viewfinder. this is so if you need glasses the camera can be set for you. Start by focusing the camera on something, then slide to turn the diopter adjustment until it looks sharp and try not to bump it.

I bought a Canon XSI for christmas. I owned a Rebel and have a 70-300mm IS USM lens which has been working ok. On the XSI all photos are blurry. My 28-135 lens works ok on the XSI.What could cause this...

Good Afternoon,
if I'm to understand your problem when you transferred the 28 to 135 lands from your rebel to your new XSI you began getting out of focus pictures.First make sure that your diopter is set properly on the camera to do this remove the lens turn the camera meter on and adjust your rear diopter control so that all the numbers in the finder are sharp to you then replace the lens. Next I would test the quality of the autofocus system. To do this place a magazine page with large bold lettering flat against the wall. Then aim the camera at this page at a 45° angle using just the center focus point.select a word on that page. Make sure your camera is in the AV mode with no flash and set your f-stop to 4.5. When you take this image you're going to look at it on the computer what you should see is the focus point that you used should be very sharp everything trailing off the backside of that focus point should be fuzzy and everything to the front side of that focus point should be fuzzy. If you find the image is sharper to the front side of your focus point you're getting what they call front focusing. If your image is sharper to the backside of your focus point you're getting what they call rear focusing. These issues can be addressed usually in the software set up on the camera. Again to recap you'll need a flat piece of artwork that you can put on the wall you need to position your camera 45° from that artwork set your f-stop to wide-open centerpoint focus only.
