Question about HP Media Center m1170n Photosmart PC Desktop

1 Answer

Whenever I try to start the HP 1170N PC, it will not show anything on the screen except some error messages. The fan will make sounds as if something is getting stuck. But when I tilt the Unit to one side, the fan noice goes offand the unit starts without any problem. When the unit is opened , no problem with fan or any wiring etc. What do you think the problem could be? It is consistent problem for the last few weeks.

The fan may be faulty.
The fan blades is hitting a wire or connector when the computer is in an upright position, but is clear when the case is opened.

How do I solve a problem with starting up windows in my hp pavilion g6? Whenever I start windows a blue screen appears and the computer restarts.

Sounds like your hard drive has either failed, come disconnected, or someone performed a full format of the drive which wiped out the partitions or the boot sector of the drive. Worst case you will need to replace drive and purchase reinstall disk from hp. Best case you will only need to purchase reinstall disk from hp. If you do need a new drive, I recommend purchasing it from hp directly, as it will already be prepared with hps proprietary boot configuration files which must be present for hardware to be recognized by system bios.

Memory problem. A page fault occurs when you don't have enough memory so it writes a page fault to disk. It could be bad RAM or driver could need an update.

Windows did not load and an option on what to do was displayed by the error message. I pressed esc instead and the error message was gone but window is still not loading. I turn the power off and on hoping...

Not a good sign...so you turn it off, turn it back on and all you get is a black screen (Black screen of *****), with lights on keyboard? No flashing of BIO screen or anything?
  • You could unplug power cord, take out batt and hold down power button for 10 secs.
  • Put everything back and start it up. But when you hit the power button start tapping the F2 key and see if you can get into the system bio screen.
  • If you can look to see if it detects the HD. If it shows no Hard Drive, the HD died.
  • If you dont see BIO screen flash that is usualy very bad and could be motherboard failure i.e. its all over.
  • Take the HHD and connect it to another pc and get your files off for the new pc.

My computor is HP pavillion a1640n and it does show some message in white after it starts opening up the in flash of a second it disapears and the screen comes on what can i do not to see this message...

It sounds like you're describing the BIOS screen. This is an image that appears whenever the computer first starts up, and only lasts for a second or two, after which Windows begins to start up. Unfortunately, it's not possible to stop the screen from displaying; it's an important part of the boot process and allows technicians to enter diagnostic screens if necessary.

Well, i have no expertise on pcdoctor and can't find that error code, i doubt that it's actually an error, why not try another piece of software to benchmark your video card then you will see if there is in fact an error.

My HP Media Center 1170n keeps freezing up on me

Try opening the sides of the computer and running the computer, If it still freezes, look inside and see if any of the fans turn off at any time, if that Happens try pushing it to make it go, if that doesnt solve it, try replacing the fan. Buy the fan at TigerDirect.com

My computer stopped showing anything on the screen.

Usually if the fans come on, you have no video output and not much else it is indicative of a motherboard (mobo) problem or failing power supply (PSU). You can self-diagnose this by removing (with the power off - of course) the memory sticks, the power plugs for the hard drive and cd-roms, etc. If you do this the computer should beep and give you different error messages on the screen. If you are getting no video output and you have tried another video card then it is more than likely a bad PSU or mobo. If you have another PSU handy you can swap it out (if it has the correct connectors). While you have your case open look at the capacitors (caps) on the motherboard. They look like small soda cans. If any of them are swollen on top or are leaking stuff then they are bad.

If you do get error messages on the screen then add components back one at a time and see what changes in the computer's start up. Write down the beeps (see if they are long ot short). Also make sure you have one hand touching the metal case to dissipate static electricity, before touching internal components.
Post back with what you find out, or for more diagnostics.
