Confused with multiple errors

I got this Emerson car DVD/CD player from a friend when they got a new one.

When you first put a disk in it acts as if it is reading it, and it says "loading" and "battery empty" (though I have been told that this model does not support a battery and there is no battery inside it) however, the power (or what I assume to be the power) flashes on and off rapidly. When it finally stays on long enough, (and it does stop flickering after a few minutes) it will say "no disk" even though I have put a brand new, never before played disk, into it. occasionally, it will successfully read the disk and provide the data that it is a "bad disk". I don't think it matters what kind of disk I use, because I have tried several and have the same results. However, if it is helpful, the first time it gave me the "bad disk" notice was when my dad put in a moderately damaged burnt copy of the Herbie movie.
