Screen wont turn on at all. machine sounds like its running but no power to the screen. i tried the vga conection and hooked it up to a monitor but still no picture.

There may be a key combination that turns the external VGA adapter on. This may be something like FUNCTION + F4. Have a look at your Function keys and see if there is an image like a screen or laptop on it. Pressing and holding the FUNCTION key then pressing the screen key will let you enable the LCD screen, the VGA, or both.

Check the gear selector switch. You may need a Chilton's book to find it. Try starting in neutral.

Screen wont come on

no "lock" button but there is a function button to switch the primary monitor from the built in one to an external one. on the lower left han side of the keyboard there is a key labled "function" hold that down and look along the top row of buttons (f keys) one of them has a green or blue picture of two monitors, with the power turned on try holding the function bution and the f key and see if it comes back on. also there is a brightness key as well make sure it is all the way up.

Not to discourage you but I just sent back 4 of these same models to acer for warranty for the exact same problem. All four of them however did work with an external monitor.
