Question about Computers & Internet

Hi, I repeatedly get these messages from anti-virus software (BitDefender): "Portscan attempt blocked. From (an changing IP address). You are protected." I recently disconnected a router and I'm plugged directlly into the modem. Is this something to worry about, and how can I stop this?

> I recently disconnected a router, and now ... plugged directly into the modem.

The router was "silently" blocking all the "unsolicited" traffic, including "port-scan" traffic from computer-hackers.

Now, that traffic is reaching your computer, and BitDefender is just "verbosely" telling you that it is blocking that traffic.

> is this something to worry about

Yes, but you have to "trust" that BitDefender is blocking 100% of such "unsolicited" traffic.

> how can I stop this?

Trace the IP-addresses of the "attackers", find contact-information for their Internet Service Providers, and get the "malicious" attacker disconnected from the Internet.

Or, just tell BitDefender to be "less-verbose".

I cant get locked in to www.hotmail.com since updating my AVG anti virus protection

Windows Live Hotmail normally loads without issue, but several problems on your computer can restrict access to your account.
Firewalls with high security sensitivity, malicious spyware and disabled cookies are three of the main reasons for blocked Hotmail accounts.
Hotmail also does not load if Microsoft blocks your account for spamlike activity.
This can happen if your account was compromised, or hacked.
Cookies

If cookies are disabled on your Internet browser, Hotmail cannot load.
Cookies store specific data about you that you have provided to a website, such as your name or address.
To turn on cookies in Internet Explorer, click "Tools" and "Internet Options."
Click "Privacy." Move the slider from "Block All Cookies" to "Medium."
This security level blocks advertising cookies but enables the cookies that allow you to access your Hotmail.
To enable Firefox cookies, click "Tools," "Options" and "Privacy."
Click "Use Custom Settings for History."
Enable cookies to view your Hotmail messages.

Check for Spyware
Spyware is a type of malicious software that steals your personal information or disables functions of your computer.
Spyware on your computer may block access to your Hotmail.
Run an anti-spyware or anti-virus program, such as Norton, AVG or Avira.
If you have a spyware or virus infection on your computer, these programs find and destroy it.
Some malware affects the "hosts" file on your computer.
Find and open the file "C:\Windows\System32\Drivers\etc\hosts" in Notepad.
Look for "passport.com" or "hotmail.com."

If you see either, malware has possibly infected the file.
Change the IP address affiliated with the file name to eliminate the problem.

Blocked Accounts Hotmail blocks accounts when it detects spamlike behavior from them.
For example, if hundreds of advertisements are sent from your account in just a few minutes, Hotmail views this as spam and blocks your account.
If you are not sending spamlike emails or instant messages, someone may have guessed your password and accessed your account.
If Hotmail blocks your account, you have the option to enter your cellphone number as verification that you are the true account owner.
When you enter your number, Microsoft sends a text message to that phone number.
Retrieve the verification code from the text message and enter it on the Sign-In page.
When you access your account, change the password immediately.

Other Options

Your firewall may block access to Hotmail or cause emails to not load.
To determine if the firewall is the problem, disable it temporarily and try to access your mail. Firewall settings are sometimes set too high.
Lower the security sensitivity before you attempt to log in to Hotmail.
If you notice other websites not loading, reset your router.
This solves many connection issues.
Check the clock on your computer.
An inaccurate clock may block you from loading Hotmail.
To ensure your clock's accuracy, click the clock in the bottom-right corner of the task bar.
Click "Date and Time" and "Internet Time."
Click "Change Settings."
Click the check box next to "Synchronize With an Internet Time Server."
Click "OK."

You probably have some viruses and malware.

Start your PC and press F8 several times until the boot menu comes up. Then select "Safe Mode with Networking". Now get some or ALL of the FREE programs below.

Download, Install and Run Malwarebytes Anti-Malware:

When Installing choose the non-pro version.

Download, Unzip, Install and Run TDSSKiller:

Download, Install and Run Super Anti-Spyware:

If you have an outdated Anti-virus program then Download, Install and Run Avira Anti-Virus:
http://majorgeeks.com/Avira_AntiVir_Personal_-_FREE_Antivirus_d955.html

I can get on yahoo email account but cannot connect to yahoo messenger. I receive message that my yahoo virtual IP server failed. What can I do to use yahoo messenger?

You shouldn't have a virtual ip number unless you're using a VPN to connect to the net. Check your firewalls, router, anti-virus and make sure the port yahoo msg uses isn't blocked. Yahoo messenger support site should tell you what the port address is that needs to be opened to use it. TYpically they are not blocked but a firewall or other, like router or anti-virus may be configured to block the port,.

Top 5 Paid Anti-Virus Software

With the brand-new Windows 7 operating system released late last year, many computer users opt to install some sort of anti-virus. There are free versions available, but are not routinely kept up-to-date as a paid version. Plus paid versions offer a better support and look nicer to the eye. Here are my best anti-virus programs for 2010.

1. GData Anti-Virus 2010
www.gdata-software.com $25 (one year, single PC license)
Based off of two free anti-viruses BitDefender and Avast, German developed GData brings the two together to form the best anti-virus. GData detected 99.95% of all threats tested and offered the best detection of adware. With its relative low-cost GData is my recommendation for best anti-virus.

2. Symantec Norton Anti-Virus 2010
www.symantec.com $40 (one year, single PC license)
Coming in a close second is the more popular Norton Anti-Virus. The detection rate was 99.49%, just shy of GData. With a great user interface and design, Norton remains one of the better anti-virus programs in 2010 and may better suit non-techie users.
3. Kaspersky Anti-Virus 2010
www.kaspersky.com $60 (one year, three PC license)
In previous years, Kaspersky has always been at the top, but with this year it has slid down to third. Kaspersky has a wide range of features including a firewall and advanced virus blocking but fails to provide a slick, user-friendly interface unlike the first two anti-virus programs which can get frustrating and confusing. The malware detection also lacks which maybe a problem on some users PC's.

4. BitDefender Anti-Virus 2010
www.bitdefender.com $30 (one year, three PC license)
BitDefender is a decent anti-virus program. Although the detection rate is 99.66%, the second best in the field. What it lacks is a good user interface and fails to remove threats. Only 90% of threats detected were removed successfully. This is defiantly a bargain on price but lacks in some areas where it maybe useful.

5. Panda Anti-Virus Pro 2010
www.pandasecurity.com $50 (one year, three PC license)
Panda Anti-Virus Pro had a 99.83% detection rating, earning it the best in the field. Although it can detect threats, it did poorly in behavioral scans of the PC. Panda also does not come with its own firewall, unlike all the anti-virus programs mentioned. The user interface needs some work around the edges and design could be better. Panda will get the job done, but is a last-ditch option for paid anti-virus programs.

Before you buy, make sure to do research and know what product you want to buy. Don't let the sales people influence you to go with the costlier option, because they say its better. Trust your research and be smart.

I received this message on my Mac this morning, in a Norton Notification box. What does this mean? Vulnerability BLOCKED When: Jan 17, 2011 10:11:35 AM From:|13858.na.sas.com Attack Name:...

The following is a technical description of the event you have experienced:

When DNS data packets are sent to a port on your computer that is not open, this is called a portscan. While portscans from an unknown computer can be potentially harmful, a portscan from your ISP or its DNS is most likely harmless and can be ignored. If you know the IP address for your ISP, you can find out if the portscan is coming from your ISP, by clicking View recent activities in Norton Confidential and viewing the Activity Log.

In layman's terms this means that you have been protected by your Norton system and you do not need to take any further action.

So, all should be OK and nothing to worry about.

China is hacking my computer, how do i block an ip?? READ MORE

So disconnect and reconnect and your ip address will be different. Unless you are a fixed / static ip address? If they are finding you again then chances are you have been hijacked already. You need to find a good forum - related to something called Hijack This - and follow their instructions. I'm not THAT good at that kind of thing. So good luck.

Task manager has an error message? You probably already been infected on the computer with some malware, spyware, and / or virus.
